SAMPLE EXCERPT:

[. . .] From a time when the use of steroids and other drugs were considered a legitimate form of enhancing performance, these types of drugs have become socially unacceptable and legally intolerable. This scandal has also created a dilemma within the ranks of major league sports; are those who used performance enhancing drugs and now hold records to keep their records. There are many who believe that the current records for most homeruns, and others won by those accused of doping should either be removed, or have an asterisk next to it to indicate that the record was not won in a fair and legal manner. This scandal has also taken its toll on those who used these drugs and then lied about it. Many have been charged with perjury and other offenses, and like Roger Clemens, have had to face the consequences.

Terrorism and Mumbai Attacks

The Indian city of Mumbai was the scene of another wave of coordinated attacks on July 13th as "three separate explosions tore through a business district…leaving at least 21 people dead and 141 injured." (Fox News) While no one has claimed responsibility as of yet, Indian officials are pointing the finger at the Indian Mujahadeen, a group that has close links to the Pakistani-based terror group known as Lashkar-e-Taiba. All three blasts occurred between 6:50 PM and 7:00 PM, the height of the rush hour.

This is not the first time the Indian city of Mumbai has been the target of terrorists. On November 26th, 2008 and lasting three days, Islamic terrorists from Pakistan carried out waves of attacks in the city, killing 164 people and wounding at least 308 others. There were 10 major attacks in total, with the targets including a hotel, cafe, hospital, Jewish community center, and a movie theatre. Two bombs also went off in unsuspecting taxis. The attacks were carried out by a Pakistani-based militant terrorist group called Lashkar-e-Taiba, which India claims is backed by the Pakistani Intelligence Service, the ISI. The only surviving attacker, named Ajmal Kasab, was captured by Indian security officials and admitted to being part of the Pakistan-based terror group, as well as receiving aid from the ISI.

The recent attacks, as well as the 2008 ones, are only the latest in a series of terrorist attacks aimed at India by Islamic terrorists. Pakistani-based Islamic terrorists have claimed responsibility for many bombings including the 1993 series of 13 coordinated explosions in and around Mumbai that killed 257 people and injured hundreds more. A number of other attacks have occurred in Mumbai in the early 2000's which have killed and injured hundreds more. Mumbai, along with Delhi, are the two main targets of terrorist attacks, according to Indian state public works minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who stated "Delhi is the political capital and Mumbai the financial one. An attack on a city like Mumbai always rocks the nation and gets the attention of the world…." (Why is Mumbai Targeted) That is why there have been five major terrorist attacks on the city of Mumbai.

India and Pakistan have been at each other's throats since the division of the country in the late 1940's. However, it is unlikely that this incident will provoke any major reaction from the Indian government. India has absorbed terrorist attacks in the past, and will continue to do so, but this attack does serve as an indication that any rapprochement between the two nations in the near future is also highly unlikely. And the fact that Pakistan is currently not cooperating with the United States in anti-terrorist activities may be an unknown element in the equation. India may see the current rift between the United States and Pakistan as an opportunity to weaken Pakistan in the eyes of the world. If so, India could try to turn this attack to their advantage by making unreasonable demands on the Pakistanis. And because both nations are nuclear powers, this could trigger a global nuclear crisis.

While any attack on India by Pakistani-based terrorists could be the spark that ignites war, it is still unlikely that India will declare war on Pakistan in response to the recent attacks. It may be more likely that India and the United States may seek an alliance against what they both see as a threat by Islamic terrorists.
