¶ … Da Vinci Robot is often regarded as the most well-known robotic surgery systems in the world. It is a robotic system that has its use specifically in minimally invasive surgery. Its role in minimally invasive surgery consists of the robot making a small opening in the patient's body decreasing downtime for the patient among other benefits. The process involves the surgeon who sits in a console inside the operating room and administers the surgical tools of the robot.

Process of Surgery for the Da Vinci Robot

Subsequently the patient has been anaesthetized, three openings are completed on the patient's body permitting the rods to go in. The surgeon has a screen he views a 3D image from that the camera transmits through the patient's body, controlled by joysticks. The camera picks up every movement of the robot and can be triggered or disengaged any time from a button (). Each surgical arm is linked with a surgical tool. Additionally, there is camera on the end of the main arm.

One of the rods possesses a camera while the others have surgical tools with the ability to cut, eliminate or sew the tissues. The Da Vinci Robot uses the same sutures and supplies found in traditional surgery. What proves to be most interesting of the utilization of the Da Vinci Robot system is that the surgeon can rotate and bend the arms of the robot much like the human wrist, assuring improved percentage of success and significant benefits for patient and surgeon. The Da Vinci robotic system comes with a lenses system with 3D (three-dimensional) view, possibly augmenting the surgical field as much as 15 times larger. The camera permits the surgeon to zoom in at the point of surgery, seeing more than human vision can therefore allowing the surgeon to perform the operation on a smaller scale than conventional surgery can.

1. Use of the Da Vinci Robot in Organizations

Essay on Da Vinci Robot Is Often Assignment

Many organizations such as hospitals, clinics, and so forth have used the Da Vinci Robot to perform their surgeries. The Fox Chase Cancer Center is one of them with one of their biggest selling points to potential patients being the Da Vinci Robot. "Fox Chase Cancer Center and its team of highly-skilled team of surgeons are among only a handful of institutions worldwide using robotics to treat nearly all types of cancer, including prostate, kidney, bladder, colon, head and neck, uterine and cervical and thoracic tumors" (Temple University Health System, 2013, p. 1). They also state on their website that the staff, trained to use the Da Vinci Robot, have additional training to ensure quality and safety. "Every robotically-trained surgeon at Fox Chase has MORE experience using the robot than their peers at other institutions" (Temple University Health System, 2013, p. 1).

The Da Vinci Robot enables surgeons to have increased and enhanced picturing and accuracy, which is critical when working in close immediacy to fragile organs like the bladder. The Fox Chase Cancer Center views this robot as a means of achieving the best outcome with minimal recovery unlike traditional surgery methods. Their website claims combining new surgery methods such as the Da Vinci Robot with the latest treatment options will provide patients with a better chance of survival and recovery. "Combining state-of-the-art robotic-assisted surgery with innovative new therapies gives patients the best chance for survival and quality of life" (Temple University Health System, 2013, p. 1).

2. Organizational Risk and Compliance Issues

Use of the Da Vinci Robot does comes with risks. A recent FDA study reveals Hospitals are under the gun to progress training for the Da Vinci surgical system because of a mounting number of reports concerning deaths, malfunctions, and injuries connected to the robotic surgery system designed and sold by Intuitive Surgical Inc. As the article states: "Reports of da Vinci robot surgery problems to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) increased from… [END OF PREVIEW] . . . READ MORE
