These mothers should be helped and trained in a way that they can rehabilitate their children with Down syndrome, take care of them and at the same time their levels of hopelessness can be decreased. It is expected and hoped that taking such precautions will contribute towards the betterment of mothers as well as that of their children. Only the mothers whose mental and psychological situation is good can make the mental and physical life of their children better.

Things media should take care of regarding Down syndrome children

Media portrays children with Down syndrome often in a wrong perspective; it necessarily may not be negative. Some of these things will be discussed in this paper. It should always be remembered that the disability of the children with this syndrome should not be focused if they are being mentioned in any story, unless the mention of the disability is crucial to the story. Instead of the disability, focus should be maintained on the issues that have affected the quality of life of these individuals. Such issues include housing, accessible transportation, affordable health care, discrimination and employment opportunities.

Another common mistake that a lot of media people make when it comes to portraying the Down syndrome children when they achieve something is that they portray these successful people as superhuman heroes. Even though the public may start admiring these people, which is not a problem, but this attitude can induce false expectations in the public.

It is a common observation that when media people are talking about children with Down syndrome, they sensationalize the whole situation by using words like suffers from, crippled with and victim of, to name a few. Instead of using these words, one should simply just the child who has Down syndrome.

It should always be remembered that people should be put first rather than their disability. This implies that when we are referring to these people, we should use phrases like people with Down syndrome, woman with Down syndrome or children who have Down syndrome. The implication of the usage of these phrases is that this sets the focus of the listener or the reader on the person and not on the functional limitation the person has. Since there is editorial pressure on the writers, it is difficult for the people who are writing about to be sensitive to such things, but they should always be careful.

It has often been observed that the media people put their emphasis on the limitations of such people and not their abilities. An example of this is that they tell the people that children or adults with Down syndrome have to make use of the wheel chair/braces, have to walk with crutches rather than saying that these people are wheel-chair bound, have different abilities or are crippled. It should also be remembered that words like pitiful and unfortunate should not be used since these words are considered to be emotional descriptors.

It has also been seen that the media portrays the people as they are burden to the society. It should always be remembered that it is important for us to tell the public that children who are born with this syndrome are just as active participants of the society as the rest of the people. When people with the disability interact and work with the normal people, it removes the barriers that are there between the two and therefore opens ways of communication.

Signs and symptoms

Surely, almost everyone has seen a child with the characteristic Down's syndrome feature at least once in his or her lifetime. The most prominent of all the symptoms is the retardation of the body and the brain to the fetal state. In other words, neotenization of the brain and the body takes place. The major findings in this clinical condition include decreased growth or maturation which is known as neoteny. Along with that there is incomplete morphogenesis seen and atavisms are also observed.

Children with Down syndrome have certain physical characteristics such that a person looking at them can quickly recognize the underlying disorder. Most of the children have an extremely small chin or a microgenia. The eye fissures are not normal are more oblique with epicanthic skin folds on the inner corner of the eye. Due to these folds and the shape of the fissures, the children often give a Mongolian look as well. The children present with a poor muscle tone or hypotonia Also, their nasal bridge is small and they have a single palmer fold. Even though the children have a small chin, they have a big tongue or macroglossia. Because of the decrease size of the oral cavity and the increased size of the tongue, the tongue is normally seen protruding out.

If the general appearance of the face is discussed, then the general appearance is very flat and broad. The kids normally have a short neck and have white spots on the iris. These spots are known as Brushfield spots. Apart from having a low muscle tone, the children also have very flexible joints. The space and the joint laxity of the atlanto- axial joint are very increased that even leads to instability of the joint. The children normally have a lot of space between the big toe and the second toe. Apart from the simian crease, the children also present with excessively small fingers.

These were certain specific features mentioned in the classic presentation of a child with Down's syndrome. The growth of such children is reduced if compared to the growth of other individuals of the same age. The parameters that are taken into considerations are height, head circumference and weight as well. Most of the children with DS might give the appearance of a chubby and stocky child because of the short height. Along with the short stature, the bowing of legs of these children also gives them a rather chubby appearance. The average height calculated for women with DS is four feet and nine inches and for men it is five feet and one inch. As mentioned earlier, the individuals look rather obese. This also occurs because the children with Down's syndrome are much likely to get more obese as they grow older.

Along with obesity, these individuals are at risk for a lot of other conditions. It is known that these children cannot live a normal life. The genetic material that they inherit not only labels them as a child with Down's syndrome but also put them in risk for other problems. The other issues that arise because of faulty genetic material can go on to damage the function and process of a certain body system or of an entire organ.

The diseases that go on to affect these children are highly variable and ultimately end in lower the life expectancy of these children. Even with increased medical attention and care, these children are at high risk for cardiovascular disturbances. The life expectancy of a person with Down's syndrome used to be 12 back in 1912. This has increase to 60 now after all the extra medical efforts put for children suffering with this disorder.

In 2012 March, the Guinness Book of Records mentioned Joyce Greeman as the oldest living person with this disorder. Joyce is a resident of London and he was born on March 14, 1925. This makes his age about 87 and he is still an alive diagnosed case of Downs Syndrome. Apart from heart conditions, persons with this disease also go on to be affected by chronic neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases usually become pronounced around the fourth or fifth decade of life. For people with Down's syndrome, dementia and Alzheimer like syndromes are a common finding later in their life.

ICT classrooms

Integrated Co-Teaching is a facility in which children can be taught with their peers alongside. Even though this sounds like a very philanthropic and beneficial approach, I personally think it is likely to be detrimental for the children with Downs Syndrome. Even though in this system there would be a general teacher and a special education available there, however the attention gives would be reduced. This talks about an entire class room full of children with some of them with disabilities and some of them without disabilities. Along with getting decreased attention, these children would feel far from the normal children as well.

The children without disabilities would be in front of the special children all the time. Even though this system and the schools major goal is to make the Down syndrome children feel normal, they would feel uncomfortable and inferior to the children without disabilities.
