There are a lot of controversial aspects which mark the history of the Middle East and especially the way in which society reflects the constant changes that take place at every moment throughout the world. In this sense, it is important to underline the fact that the Middle East region is an area of tremendous influences especially from the Western world. This is largely due to the fact that most Muslim countries are now going through an important process of change and modernization which is visible in all walks of life.

The case of Egypt is in this sense essential for pointing out the way in which religion has played a major part in shaping the society and the social structure in Egypt. Therefore, the historical discussion over the influences of Christianity and the situation in Egypt at the moment is essential.

Christianity has long been viewed as an influence which determined the evolution of the religious practice in the Middle East. It is rather well-known the fact that the Christian faith represents one of the most important influences in the history of Egypt. In this sense, "the history of Christianity in Egypt dates back verily to the beginnings of Christianity itself. Many Christians hold that Christianity was brought to Egypt by the Apostle Saint Mark in the early part of the first century AD" (Scott, 1997). Therefore, it can be said that the influences of the Christian faith manifested themselves very early in the history of the region. Moreover, the various influences determined a certain ratio of forces which continue to this day. In this sense, the Jewish population has had an important role in determining the state of conflict in the region. However, this relationship is the result of biblical history and of the claim for the same territory.

The issue of Christianity is in nowadays Egypt one of the most discussed about issue concerning the society. In this sense, there are constant tensions between Muslims and Christians, the latter being considered a minority in the country. More precisely, there are reports of tensions and conflicts which develop into rather violent conflicts between the different religions adherents. For instance, people are often viewed in a negative manner should they desire to change their religious. One such example is that of "Christian convert Mohammed Ahmed Hegazy (who) is in hiding - sleeping in different places each night - after Muslims mounted death threats against him for suing Egypt for refusing to accept his application to officially change his religion from Islam to Christianity on his identification papers" (Cole, 2007).

Thus, the influence of the religious aspect inside the state appear to be obvious especially if the Constitution specifically mentions the fact that the main source of law is the Islamic creed. From this point-of-view, the issue of the religious minorities represents a matter of great debate, taking into account that Egypt is not seen as a tolerant country.

Another important aspect in which the religious part has played a significant role is the issue of women in the society. In this sense, it is rather well-known the fact that women in Muslim societies have at least from the Western's point-of-view, a disadvantaged place. Despite the fact that the Constitution considers women to be equal to men in all respects and in front of the law, this rarely happens in practice.

The emergence of women in the Egyptian society came as a result of constant Western influences in the 20th century. More precisely, the feminist movements which crossed the barriers of the equality of the individual in the social environment had effects in the Muslim society as well. Thus, at the middle of… [END OF PREVIEW] . . . READ MORE
