Although we must certainly credit psychologist Howard Gardner with having developed the model of multiple intelligences, we should also acknowledge the fact that it is based (like many ideas about intelligence and learning) to some extent at least in common-sense knowledge about the world. We all know some people who are brilliant at math and terrible at spelling and some who can only study when surrounded by absolute silence as well as those who can only do calculus while listening to heavy metal.

Teachers who are aware of and accommodate (to the extent that it is reasonable and possible to do so) the different learning styles of children create an atmosphere in which children grow both emotionally and intellectually.

The following seven types of learning are those described by Gardner:

Linguistic: Children with this kind of intelligence enjoy writing, reading, telling stories or doing crossword puzzles.

Logical-Mathematical: Children with lots of logical inteligence are interested in patterns, categories and relationships. They are drawn to arithmetic problems, strategy games and experiments.

Bodily-kinesthetic: These kids process knowledge through bodily sensations. They are often athletic, dancers or good at crafts such as sewing or woodworking

Spatial: These children think in images and pictures. They may be fascinated with mazes or jigsaw puzzles, or spend free time drawing, building with Legos or daydreaming.

Musical: Musical children are always singing or drumming to themselves. They are usually quite aware of sounds others may miss. These kids are often discriminating listeners.

Interpersonal: Children who are leaders among their peers, who are good at communicating and who seem to understand others' feelings and motives possess interpersonal intelligence.

Intrapersonal: These children may be shy. They are very aware of their own feelings and are self-motivated.

It should be clear how a combined emphasis on the importance of emotional intelligence and an acknowledge of the importance of teaching children through a model of multiple intelligences adds up to a perspective that is called SEL or social and emotional learning. This is a holistic approach in which emotional and intellectual skills are taught hand in hand with each other to allow each child to develop as fully as possible as an individual.

The following definition of SEL from a school district in New Jersey that incorporates an SEL model across its curriculum provides an excellent overview of this concept:

Social and emotional learning is the ability to understand, manage and express the social emotional aspects of one's life in ways that enable the successful management of life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, solving everyday problems, and adapting to the complex demands of growth and development.

Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults develop the skills, attitudes, and values necessary to acquire social and emotional competence.

Moreover, such a multi-disciplinary approach allows children to acquire an accurate self-knowledge and a high degree of self-understanding - both of which lead in turn to increases in both learning skills and emotional balance. Charles Horton Cooley described the connection between an accurate self-image and a range of cognitive skills:

It should be evident that the ideas that are associated with self-feeling and form the intellectual content of the self cannot be covered by any simple description, as by saying that the body has such a part in it, friends such a part, plans so much, etc., but will vary indefinitely with particular temperaments and environments. The tendency of the self, like every aspect of personality, is expressive of far-reaching hereditary and social factors, and is not to be understood or predicted except in connection with the general life. Although special, it is in no way separate -- speciality and separateness are not only different but contradictory, since the former implies connection with a whole. The object of self-feeling is affected by the general course of history, by the particular development of nations, classes, and professions, and other conditions of this sort.

Although Cooley wrote this in 1902, his observations are still quite relevant to research being done today into the nexus of emotional, social and intellectual development.

Learning Inhibitors number of scholars have investigated the major reasons why some children (despite the fact that they may test well on IQ tests) simply do not do well in the classroom. There are a number of reasons why children may fail to do well academically, from health problems to stressful situations at home to minor learning disabilities. However, all of these problems can be lessened if not actually removed through teaching styles that emphasize teaching the whole child.

Among the problems that children face in learning are - as suggested by the Cooley quote above - a self-image that is in some important way skewed or unrealistic. This is often tied to the problem of poor self-esteem, although the two are not in fact the same.
