SAMPLE EXCERPT . . .
Like the subject, my faith has waxed and waned over the years. Learning about different faiths in academic study, challenged my personal experiences. Learning about negative aspects of religion as well as positive ones, and how some people believe that science conflicts with religion, have likewise challenged my faith. On the other hand, I think that forcing myself to reconsider a simplistic understanding of faith and speaking with people who are critically thinking individuals yet still consider themselves believers has ultimately made my belief stronger, not weaker.

It was interesting to read what the interview subjected noted about how a crisis can make some people doubt their faith, and other people return to their faith. When someone dies at a young age, the natural reaction might seem to be to doubt the goodness of the universe, given that someone so innocent, with such bright prospects, could be taken so young. On the other hand, it is equally possible to look at the flip side of such a tragedy and to seek comfort from a faith community. It is natural to fight a sense that nothing is meaningless and to want to believe everything in life has a purpose. During the drowning tragedy described by the subject, as well as the loss of his grandfather, he described finding comfort in the community and an existing faith structure.

It is very difficult to believe that we are in the world alone, and that our brief lives have no meaning and purpose. Religion can give us a sense of that purpose and meaning. The common nature of crisis driving someone to faith, away from faith, or into a different view of faith highlights the value of the stage-based faith interview process to discuss both cognitive and psychosocial aspects of faith. Even the subject acknowledged this; despite the fact of sometimes logically doubting the value of his own faith, he also at times found solace in the sociological and community-based aspects of faith outside of those of a strictly theological model.

Reflections on Fowler and Moseley Readings

Critique on Faith-Based Development Stages Assignment

For me, this highlights some of the potential weaknesses of some of the Moseley & Fowler (et al., 1993) model, given that so much of the language is drawn from Christianity. Particularly in other traditions, nationality and culture may play an equally powerful part in faith as strict belief. Even some Christians may gain greater comfort and structure for their faith because of the social context of their religion rather than from its internal aspects or what their religion says about God, sin, evil, and ritualistic or symbolic concerns. Still, the model does allow for personal spirituality such as meditation and non-church based practices that increasingly inform many people’s faith journey. Many people today choose aspects of faiths they can personally relate to, and mix them in with spirituality such as yoga and meditation.

In my own life, I have similarly take a mix-and-match approach, although I acknowledge I am still influenced by the religions I was exposed to as a child through family and friends. On the whole, I do not feel pressure to choose a specific belief structure or make definitive decisions about questions such as sin and evil, but reading the interview and the readings have prompted me to greater critical reflection on these subjects. At minimum, although tolerance of all faiths (as long as they are tolerant of others) is important to me, it is equally vital to reflect upon faith-based and ethical considerations, and to live a good life. Of course, what constitutes a good life is still open to question, but at minimum it is important to think about what it entails.
