This is way longer than I should have written. Since I couldn't figure out what to put precisely where, I probably overwrote some of it. I'm not complaining, just letting you know. it's easier to take some out. Also, I wanted to include some of the references, though they probably belong elsewhere.

Also, there are certain answers I simply cannot provide regarding various data use and management approaches. The same is true for the kinds of tests you intend to run. I don't think they require a lot of writing but I believe they need to be offered by you. I would find it easier to write up the Validity and Reliability sections as well if I knew more about the factors I just mentioned. Still, I added a few sentences in regard to what is known about the JSS and the MLQ. That helps to ensure I used all of the references, I think. Anyway, you should find them interesting for other parts of the project. If YOU WANT, you can fill in some details on the last part and I will draft out a few sentences to make them fit.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Only 50-60% of leaders admit to being effective in the critical leadership skills needed to foster quality relations with employees (Newhall, 2012). Supervisory leadership is one of the factors that have a significant impact on lower employee job satisfaction (Mardanov, Heischmidt, & Henson, 2008). To no small degree, this is in part of the reason why greater amounts of attention are now being focused on the practical and efficacy importance of the differences within leadership models. If better assessments can be made between these factors and pragmatic considerations such as overall employee satisfaction, it may be possible to align specific leadership traits and tactics with greater organizational effectiveness.

In institutional settings such as community and state colleges (the higher educational levels now gaining credible importance in regard to obtaining an affordable, quality degree), faculty members with some times of field or operational achievement are often moved into leadership positions even if they do not have the idea knowledge for performing such expectations, thereby causing difficulties with other faculty members (Klein and Takeda-Tinker, 2009) and with larger institutional goals. A recent study on a related topic, for example, found that "leaders who give sufficient power to followers will encourage them in using their intellect and fullest potential to overcome job obstacles, understanding the targeted goals and supporting the organizational interests" (Ismail, et al., 2009:6).

This study seeks to address this evolving field of interest by undertaking a correlational study of the elements and factors associated with the leadership characteristics of business school deans and business school faculty within the Florida College System. The research will undertake a quantitative comparison of the self-identified transformational or transactional leadership characteristics of the department deans as viewed by lower-level business faculty. This approach has been demonstrated as effective in other settings. No such studies have previously been undertaken in regards to the Florida State System. This section provides an overview of the methodological and assessment approach used in implementing this study.

The Project

Leadership characteristics, whether transformative or transactional, involve an interaction of a number of tangential considerations. Past studies have related these administrative elements to a variety of organizational elements, but have encountered some challenges when dealing with teachers or instructors (Astrauskait?, 2011). The goal of this project is to focus these considerations specifically on the impact of known job satisfaction variables that can be influenced by specific leadership traits and practices. The dependent variable (job satisfaction) will be assessed through the use of the recognized Job Satisfaction Survey designed by Spector (____). The independent variable (perceived leadership style of the business school deans) will be ascertained by using the 5x-Short Form of the well-established Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. The proposed study will utilize the principles and patterns of correlational design.

The goal of the study is to identify and measure the existing correlations (if any) between leadership styles of business academic deans in the Florida College System and job satisfaction of business faculty within this system. The specific objectives of the undertaking will be to assess the strengths of a number of specific research questions and hypotheses associated with the demographic and job satisfaction measures of the targeted faculty member and their perceived link to the leadership style of their department deans. Others have demonstrated that there are specific competitive advantages associated with exposure to various leadership elements (Wagner and Hollenbeck, 2002) and even profitability, that are the underlying issues of importance in the business sector (Rowold and Heinitz, 2007). Specific findings from the study will also be seen as relevant to the Florida State System for its consideration in the ways in which it can adapt its promotional and advancement systems vis-a-vis accepted leadership style paradigms.

Hypotheses will be used to determine to what extent the leadership styles of business academic deans impact the job satisfaction of business faculty within the Florida College System. Other study elements will collect relevant demographic information, such as gender, employment experience on site, employment status (full or part-time), etc. The survey data analysis and interpretation is conducted using the IBM SPSS ™ GradPack software. The research interpretation includes a descriptive analysis of statistical correlations between the two variables. Charts and tables are also included.

Purpose Statement

How do perceived transactional or transformational leadership characteristics of Florida business deans' impact business departmental faculty job satisfaction and by implication the effectiveness of their instructional or educational effectiveness?

Role of the Researcher

The role of the researcher is always critical in ensuring that studies are developed and implemented in accordance with accepted scientific standards. The current study will utilize recognized JSS and MLQ instruments of which much is known about their effectiveness and reliability (Gill, 2011: Ismail, et al., 2009), which means that much is already known and accepted about the proper use of these tools. Others ((Avolio & Bass, 2004) have previously demonstrated that certain components of the MLQ can be reliably tied to job satisfaction as well as perceived leadership. As such, it will be important to understand how to assess the data to maximize the validity of the findings in accordance with performance and ethical expectations relating to faculty members, since issues have been raised about how instructors view job performance differently (Klein, 2009). These issues are addressed in more detail elsewhere in this proposal.

Participants

The target population will be all of the business school faculty members from all of the geographic locations within the Florida State System. The estimated pool of potential participants is ____, which includes the majority of the 28 campus locations.

Research Methods and Design

The quantitative research design includes both research questions and hypotheses. Research questions seek to find relationship between independent and dependent variables. Hypotheses seek to validate the expected relationship between variables. Quantitative strategies provide trends for that which is being studied or determination if a specific variable influences an outcome (Creswell, 2009). The design of this study relies heavily on quantitative data collection associated with the identified measurement instruments.

Methods:

The study will primarily involve the collection of data gathered in accordance with the recognized use of the two main study instruments. Each of these instruments has specific techniques for using them properly, and they will be implemented accordingly here.

The MLQ-5x Short Form is a 45 item questionnaire that considers seven areas when assessing the leader's behaviors: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, contingent reward, and laissez-faire behaviors. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) is a measurement tool designed by Paul Spector. The author of the survey allows researchers to use it free of charge as long as it is used for noncommercial educational or research purposes and the results are shared with him (Spector, 1994).

Research Design:

To examine the theory that leadership style of business academic deans impact the job satisfaction of business faculty within the Florida College System, hypotheses will be developed. Each corresponds to a relevant research question. These questions will likewise be assessed in accordance with the findings of a number of other studies that suggest some limitations about job satisfaction and leadership perception (Mardanov, 2008). Since this study will use the full components of the known instruments, the potential impacts will be discussed in the findings and conclusions sections.

Research Question 1: To what extent do transformational leadership characteristics impact job satisfaction within the Florida State System amongst business faculty members?

H1: There is no significant correlation between transformational leadership styles of academic deans and the job satisfaction of business faculty members in the Florida College System.

Ha: There is a positive correlation between transformational leadership styles of academic deans and the job satisfaction of business faculty members in the Florida College System.
