There may be different methods available for taking decisions and the important point is to use the proper method for taking the decision and this depends on the situation. There are different methods of decision making for business and force field analysis is an important method for taking decisions. The method of force field analysis understands the positives and the negatives of taking a decision. The first help it provides is through telling the individual using the method of the correct decision to take under the particular circumstance. After taking the concerned decision, then it helps the individual to know as to the factors that have to be strengthened if the decision has to be changed, and this is the most important part of this method. The best interests of the organization may be served if a certain decision is taken, but a force field analysis may initially tell the decision maker that the decision would be wrong to take at that point in time. Then the decision maker can find out through the method as to what factors may have to be strengthened for taking a decision which would be in the best interests of the organization. The advantage of doing a force field analysis does not however remove the importance or significance of other types/methods of analysis and one of the most prominent and significant analysis if the one relating to the cost benefit analysis. This is considered to be a more or less problematic analysis as the costs which incur in relation to decision may be received only at one single point of time, or on a regular or constant basis for the operation of a facility, whereas the which may be considered to be received over a period or process of time. The comparison of the costs with that of the benefits has to be really brought down to an analysis which includes the costs or benefits at any given point of time which is fixed. In some of the cases, it could be seen that this is being decided by the various policies of the company with regard to investing, and they might like to attain figures which are being based on a 3 or 5 basis. Generally this type of analysis is carried out using only the costs and benefits as expressed in financial terms. At the same time, it is important to consider the long-term costs and benefits of projects also, and some of them may not be expressed in financial terms. This may mean that the cost of building a road would generally involve only the cost of materials and labor in building the road, and the benefits would consider the improvements that would occur in transportation. In general, it would not consider the environmental damage, or the benefits that easier travel would provide. To be more accurate in the evaluation of a road, and its cost and benefits, it would be better to decide financial benefits of these factors which are often intangible in nature. The values to be put on them may also differ on the individual who is doing the evaluation. Then the analysis would also involve the force fields for the decision, and would probably become a force field analysis.

The general method of carrying out a force field analysis involves the following steps. The first step is to decide on the forces supporting the change in one column, as has been done in the figure-1 given below. The next step is to assign a score to all these factors depending on their importance or perceived importance ranging from 1 to 5. Here 1 is the weakest force demanding the change and 5 is the strongest force demanding the change. All the forces have to be listed down on one side with their relative importance on one side. Opposing these, on the other side would have to be the listing of the reasons for not taking the decision and again these can be listed down in order of strength of the reason. Thus there are two columns, one listing the causes and their strengths and the other showing the reasons for not going ahead with the project and their relative strengths. Then the sum total of the strengths on the two sides can be totaled and whichever column has the greater ranking, or total should be done. That would also be a force field analysis, only in different terms.

The usage of force field analysis is the highest when a major decision has to be taken, like setting up new manufacturing equipment in a factory. The force field analysis will help in deciding whether the action should be taken or not. An analysis of this nature can be seen in figure-1 given above. It is possible that in certain cases, the forces which are opposing the decisions of the management are stronger, and then it would be essential to cut down the strength of the opposing forces, or in the alternative to increase the strength of the supporting forces. Sometimes it is thought that pushing down decisions is the best action, but this may lead to a lot of uncooperative subordinates. If the jobs are viewed to be large, then they may be however broken down into several component elements. One of the matters that probably need consideration today is the amount of stress that workers face and action should be taken so that it is reduced. Some reasons are given for this high amount of stress to develop. The first of these are the design of the tasks that are given to the workers and this involves heavy workload, rare breaks for rests, long working hours and that too has to be done in shifts; hectic and routine jobs most of which do not seem to have any meaning to the worker; routine jobs that do not match up to the skills of the worker on the job and also provides little sense of control to the worker. In short, the worker is not satisfied with the job. The second consideration is of management style and this involves the lack of importance given to workers in decision making, unclear passing of information within the organization and lack of policies within the organization which helps families of workers. The next point is about interpersonal relationships which come due to the poor social environment and lack of help that workers get from co-workers or supervisors. In short even when the worker gets out of the factory, he is not contented with the environment. (Stress in Today's Workplace)

The next point is the roles that have to be played during work and most individuals have to face conflicting situations and job expectations which are uncertain with an overpowering responsibility and too many functions to perform. The next point is about the dissatisfaction of workers with their career prospects as there is high job insecurity and very little opportunity for them to grow, advance or be promoted. In addition to this, there are also rapid changes within the organization for which the workers are the least prepared. Even the working conditions do not give pleasure as they unpleasant and physically unsafe through noise, air pollution, crowding, and ergonomic problems. The situation in certain institutions can be seen from figure 2 given below. (Stress in Today's Workplace) This also requires change and any change means that practical decisions have to be taken, for which it is better to do a force field analysis first as that is likely to tell you whether it will satisfy the requirements that are in mind and whether that is the best way to do it.
