[. . .] Unlike secular thought, I rely on faith in God's will as a necessary and good thing. Secular thought characterizes faith as a type of believing without knowledge (Moreland, 2007), whereas as a Christian I understand that faith in God cannot exist if it is not based on knowledge of the state of the world, of me, and of the character of God. Principle #4 is very important here, "At salvation the spirit of the individual is linked to God" (Cox, n.d., p. 1). Without having a spiritual link to God everything is meaningless. There is no hope, no future, no real knowledge, and no salvation if one's spirit is not linked to God. Only by knowing God can one link their spirit to God. Accordingly we again see that knowledge, spiritual matters, and faith are inherently linked to the Almighty and are not mutually exclusive constructs. In order to be complete and have real knowledge one must know God.

I can learn about the state of the world and about aspects of myself through intellectual pursuits, whereas the character of God is clearly spelled out in the Bible. However, it is easy to follow to the trap of thinking that man's knowledge supersedes the principles of God or spirituality. It is important to remember Moreland's notion of the empty self and what this type of thinking will lead to (Moreland, 2007). It is important to remember that all of the knowledge, the wonders of the universe, scientific laws, etc., come from God. Whether we want to believe this or not we inherently understand this as principle # 33 reminds us "People respond to the world by way of their internal model of the world rather than via how the world might really be" (Cox, n.d., p. 3). We need to remember that scientific descriptions, intellectual facts, philosophical ideals, etc. are a means to an end and not the end themselves. "Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God really say, you must not eat from a tree in the garden?' The woman said to the serpent, 'We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not be fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' 'You will surely not die,' the serpent said to the woman. 'For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil'" (Genesis 3:1 -- 5, NIV). The fall of man resulted from the desire to have knowledge without God, independent from him, and the belief that this would make man God. However, this cannot happen. Thus, the information learned from intellectual pursuits of subjects such as physics, chemistry, etc. help to clarify my knowledge of these constructs as well as to strengthen my faith in the miraculous power of God. To treat knowledge is an end in itself is a deception. Unlike secular thought I understand that the so-called "hard sciences" provide evidence for the power of God as opposed to evidence against the existence of a supreme being. This does not mean that I have all of the answers or that I am fully certain that the knowledge I believe I have is always valid; however, it does mean that I can reconcile subjective and objective truth by knowledge and faith. Thus, acquiring knowledge reminds me of and reinforces the supreme love and power of God.
