The objective of this report is to show why I enrolled for the Human Computer Interface (HCI) this course and my initial objectives (expected outcomes).

An evaluation of the importance of studying HCI and the expected outcomes

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) which is the study of how individuals design, put to use as well as employ the interactive computer systems is very important to my study of Information systems. The most important thing I noted with the study of HCI is that it deals with the effects of computers on people, organizations and the general society. A review of my lecture notes indicates the following aspects of HCI. The expected outcomes of studying this course would be;

1. The ability to design better and more ergonomic compute HCI systems

2. The ability to design more responsive HCI systems to aid people with disability

3. The ability to comprehend the concept of HCI and its related technologies

4. The acquisition of credible knowledge that is crucial for the design of future HCI systems

Zhang (2011a) on the organizational as well as the business context of HCI pointed out that there are various levels of studying HCI. The organizational and business context of HCI is subdivided into individual level, group level, organization level as well as inter-organizational level.

On interactive technologies, Zhang (2011) pointed out (HCI) is a research field that is interdisciplinary in nature and is concerned with the study of interactions that take place between computers and people. It is made up of a wide range of disciplines that range from computer science, ergonomics, and human factors to behavioral sciences. The field of HCI includes researching on the design, the developments as well as the applications of interactive computer systems. The emphasis is however placed on the 'user' as well as the 'interaction' aspects of the computer system. There have been arguments that seem to emphasize that the legitimization of HCI as a field of research is due to its emphasis on the importance of representing the 'user'. HCI is needed to speak as well as act for the users in various ways. This is because it is commonplace to ignore the 'user' during system design. The initial attention is placed on the user interface and then later shifted to the use of the user interface for the purpose of realizing a collaborative as well as organizational application. The research in HCI as a Management Information System (MIS) module has a lot of emphasis on the interactions that take place between information, humans, tasks and technologies. This is especially important in the organizational, business, cultural and managerial realms. It is worth pointing out that there is a lot of interest on the need to put users in a central position of the design process. The most recent HCI approaches have a sharp focus on the needs of users. These include designs that are centered on the user, cooperative design, interaction design, usability engineering as well as user experience engineering.

Zheng (2011c) pointed out clearly that the main agenda in this HCI topic is the analysis and study of;

1. Ergonomics as well as Ergonomic engineering

2. The Human performance as well as the physical limitations. In this domain we study performance as a measure of fit as well as Fitt's Law

3. The implications for a given design are also studied. In this domain, I explored the sensory perceptions, technical support for individuals with disability as well as health problems.

In this course, I learnt that Ergonomics is nothing other than the physical fits that exists between machines and humans. It is also pointed out by Zhang (2011c) as an applied science that is concerned with the design as well as the arrangement of things that individuals use to enhance human to human as well as human to machine interaction. Ergonomic engineering on the other hand is the science of human engineering that combines physical limitations with the study of human body mechanics as well as industrial psychology.

Measurement of human performance

According to Zhang (2011c), human performance is measured by the level of reduced errors, reduced time for the completion of a project and the level of improved quality. The physical limitations of humans are noted to be those associated with hearing, reach of the arm as well as visual distance. There are also sensory limits, responder limits as well as colors.

The health issues that are associated with Human Computer Interactions (HCI) are;

Muscular problems that include sore as well as damaged muscles caused by the high frequency of computer usage.

The constrained human postures that results due to extended work on a computer while in a static position causes, arthritis, tendonitis/peri-tendonitis, inflammation of tendons', athroses and problems with inter-vertebral disks among other health issues.

Technical support that can be developed via HCI technologies is appropriate for the visually impaired, those with hearing problems as well as for individuals with disabilities.

Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Engineering as applied to HCI

The other valuable knowledge I gained in this course is the link and applications of Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Engineering as applicable to HCI.I was able to fully understand the concepts of controlled processes as well as goal driven behavior, cognitive psychology, sensation and HIP as well as extended models. The implication of HIC to Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Engineering also became clearer to me. As an example, I learnt that its assists people to effectively regain their lost attention to task through a careful presentation of the tasks on a given display via efficient structuring, temporal and spatial cures. It also supports a divided attention in tasks through the provision of multiple windows. It reminds one of the points of interruptions in order for the user to effectively get back to the tasks that they had suspended.

Affective Engineering

Affective engineering is another area of HCI that I learnt. I leant the reasons as to why it is crucial to focus on the human side of HCI. The basic concepts such as affects, emotions, core affect, affective state and feeling were evaluated. The representations of affect were studies and the structure of affects. Also of great importance to this study is the relationship that exists between cognition and affect. On the ICT design side, I learnt about the affective quality of certain objects as well as a brief introduction to affective computing. The implications of affective engineering to HCI design became clearer to me. I learnt that PAQ can be considered as a bridge that links the features of it objectives to the evaluative reactions of the users towards the application of it. I also learnt that it is crucial for it designers, stakeholders and trainers to pay a lot of attention to affective quality other than on other less important attributes like usability and utility. The role of flow in the context of HCI is another concept that I grasped. I learnt that flow is important for increasing communication level, for eliciting exploratory behavior, enhancing learning, for positively impacting attitude and affect and for use by the computer. The flow concept was evaluated in personal computers (PCs), internet, and e-commerce as well as in computer training. The applications of affective computing are yet another knowledge I acquired. I learnt that it is applicable in the design of e-mail text readers that express tone, enhancing computer assisted learning, improving theories of learning. Affective computing is also important in aiding austic individuals to recognize the emotion of others and in expressing their emotions accordingly.

According to Zheng (2011d), affect which is also referred to as feeling, mood or emotion is a basic aspect of every person. Industrial psychology heavily affects a person's reflex, cognition, perception and behavior. Social psychology on the other hand has a heavy influence on human behavior such as job satisfaction, shopping behavior. Zheng (2011d) further pointed out that the study of affect is currently being moved to be part of organization psychology as well as Industrial psychology. The study of affect was also revealed to be important since it reveals that there is a need to comprehend human emotion in order fathom cognition, behavior, perception as well as decision making. Through the study of affect, we get to realize that too much emotion is detrimental due to the fact that one can easily make rush and ill thought-out personal decisions. Too little of human emotions on the other hand has been shown to be detrimental since it leads to irrationalism as evident with patients with frontal lobe disorders.
