Key Concepts and Terminology

Organizational Behavior- is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act within organizations. This is done best by taking a system approach. This means that the people/organization relationships must be assessed in terms of the whole person, the whole group, the whole organization, and the whole social system. The purpose of this is to build better relationships that take into account human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives (Organizational Behavior, 2008).

Organizational Culture- organizational culture can be defined as the personality of the organization. Culture is comprised of the assumptions, values, norms and substantial signs of the organization members and their behaviors (Organizational Culture, 2009).

Diversity- Workplace diversity is process of focusing on the differences and similarities that people bring to an organization. Diversity is often thought to include things such as profession, education, parental status and geographic location (Workplace Diversity, 2009).

Communication- Is the successful talking that must go on between not only co-workers but also between managers and staff as well. Good communication is needed in order for a team to be successful (Effective Communication in the Workplace, n.d.)

Organizational Effectiveness and Efficiency- Organizational effectiveness is defined as each person doing what they know how to do and doing it well. Organizational efficiency is the ability of an organization to produce the results that they want with a minimum outlay of energy, time, money, and resources (Organizational Effectiveness and Efficiency, 2004).

Organizational Learning- Organizational learning pertains to the ways that an organization can perform their functions successfully, while encouraging people to reach their full potential. The more information that an employee is given the better chance they have to do their job successfully.

The goal is go perform successfully and at the same time they strive to help the world to be a better place (What is Organizational Learning? 2004).

Today's health care workplace faces many challenges on a daily basis. Some of these challenges include:

Communication is seen as the number one thing that affects the workplace today. Most people believe that their organizations lack the mechanisms needed for clear and effective communication. Workers think that their organization could easily improve communication by improving on information delivery and active listening strategies.

Diversity must be defined and addressed so that the organizational goals are well defined within the organization and sensitive to the many different values held by different groups. People must also be given the opportunity to re-define and re-direct these goals as the needs within the organization change.

The organizational behavior should take into account employee participation and involvement. Employees want and expect to be involved, and management should have this expectation of employees as well. Workers want to be viewed as helping to come up with the solutions to the problems, and not seen as the problem itself.

The organizations effectiveness and efficiency is determined by its ability to hold a successful position in the market place and speaks to its ability to serve its community to the best of its ability. Great care should be taken to make sure that there is a balance between these two things. Although at times it may be required that organizations take steps toward innovation and growth, organizations should keep in mind that rapid progress and change does not always ensure that healthcare professionals are able to maintain their ability to provide quality healthcare. Sometimes it is better to slow down and focus on quality than it is to try and be the first in the market to develop a new concept or product.

The organizations culture must aggressively pursue strategies that highlight individual and group success. Employees feel that there is a need to develop and implement programs that promote everyone's achievements. These tools can be used to help remedy workplace strain that is created by increased workloads and ever changing environments.

Health care facilities must find ways to promote organizational learning so that staff can find ways to better build partnerships with each other and with the communities that they serve (Skelton, 2002).

If an organization is to be successful they must work with both their managers and staff to incorporate all of these things into their daily routines of doing business. As a group, administrators, managers and staff must work together to find a common way to unite together their ideas and thoughts so that they can build a shared vision for the organization. High performing organizations generally create environments that allow them to recruit and hold on to motivated and high performing employees. These types of organizations generally tend to demonstrate strong customer satisfaction. They manage to create customers that tell others of their positive experiences. Employees in these types of organizations are seen as satisfied employees, and will rate themselves as enjoying their work. These people don't mind in helping to recruit new employees into the organization. As a result of these efforts, these organizations find themselves delivering better quality services with fewer steps resulting in lower costs (Skelton, 2002).

When you have happy employees and happy customers you can truly say that you have achieved a successful organization and are doing things to the best of your ability. The key is that once you have achieved this success you need to figure out how to maintain it so that patients continue to get good quality health care and your employees continue to like their jobs.

Although there are many beliefs about what core competencies are needed to achieve organizational success, the following are most often seen as the values that best exemplify the characteristics of high performing organizations:

Customer satisfaction - if the customers are not satisfied they will eventually stop using the facilities, so good customer service is essential to success.

Organizational performance- if the organization does not perform at it best the customers will not be satisfied and will once again stop using the services.

Employee satisfaction - employee satisfaction is critical to customer satisfaction. If the employees are not satisfied they will not perform up to their potential which will lead to unhappy customers.

Reward, recognition and reinforcement - this is a key component in keeping employees and ultimately the customers happy. Employees need to feel as if they are contributing to the overall good of the organization and that their efforts are appreciated and recognized.

Organizational goals- organizational goals need to be defined and then shared will all employees so that everyone knows what the company wants to achieve and what the plan is on how the company intends to make it happen (Skelton, 2002).

Successful organizations are only as good as their managers and staff. The best organizations find their leaders in many places not just within the top levels of management.

In order for the health care workplace environment to be successful, all the key players, including administration and front line staff alike must work to achieve a competitive advantage in order to have success in patient care and quality.

Equally, it is this same workplace environment where difficulty and potentially destructive things can happen. Anticipating these things ahead of time can help an organization possibly avoid a very serious situation. If an organization is tuned it this anticipation can happen without much effort.

Leaders from every level in the organization must serve as promoters of transformation and change. Health care must take advantage of the moment and provide the necessary tools and resources for creating a well run and progressive work environment that is anchored in the traditional values of caring and concern (Skelton, 2002).
