1.1: Discussion of the Actual Development

Oak Creek is an attempting to implement the latest technology to enhance its position in the healthcare industry. The company has disbursed the total amount of $1.5 Million as the budget for the project. With the total budget disbursed, the company aims to deliver unparallel healthcare provision for the community at lower costs using the latest technology. The WAN technology is designed to connect Miami, FL and Fairfax, VA. The new technology also includes the database system to store patients' data and achieving business solution for the company. The project also upgrades the LAN (Local Area Network) of each center to enhance the quality of service (QoS) for the organization. The project has also implemented the network security for the two centers in order to enhance business confidentiality.

Hostlinks Telecommunication is a company that assists the Oak Creek Healthcare to develop the entire new WAN, LAN, the associated network, and the network security for the two centers. By utilizing Hotlinks private internet protocol (PIP), the project is able to transform Oak Creek Health Care into a leading healthcare provider in the country.

Actual project development is as follows:

To enhance greater understanding on the extent the new technology provides benefits for Oak Creek Healthcare; the study reviews the previous work.

1.2: Review of the Previous Work

Vasudh and Jindal (2011) demonstrate the importance of routing for the successful operation and good performances of network. A routing protocol determines the standard and rules the routers communicate with one another, and it selects the exchange of topology information and the best path for the network information flow. Typically, a routing protocol selects the exchange of information to be achieved within the network system without interruption. Within the network information system, delivery of packets is only possible through router. To facilitate the delivery of packets, a router has a routing table that selects exchange of network topological information and the best path router forwards information to different destinations. To enhance the network reliability and availability, a router may make use of (EIGRP) Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol or IGRP (Interior Gateway Routing Protocol).

However, Fetterolf & Anandalinga (1992) demonstrate that transparent bridges perform much better than router for the interconnection of LANs across WAN. Typically, bridges could provide higher performances devices that could be used to connect LAN at Medium Access Control (MAC) level. The major reason that makes many organizations to consider using bridges is to address the problem of network interconnection for the LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network). In the last few decades, there has been an explosive growth in the use LANs (Local Area Network). The LAN provides high-speed data communication for different corporate organizations notable healthcare organizations. However, within large facilities, it is a common procedure to interconnect multiple LANs with transparent bridges. One of the major advantages of bridge is that it monitors LAN automatically in case an unauthorized user attempts to have access to the corporate network. Many corporations are now choosing the bridge technology for the interconnection of LANs for the following reasons:

Bridges have ability to forward packets at much higher rates than routers.

Bridges offer high degree of flexibility and having ability to configure themselves automatically as well as learning IP addresses of the entire host over the internet.

Bridges could better deal with the heterogeneous traffic. Since a bridge operates at Medium Access Control (MAC) level, it could effectively ignore higher level of networks.

Based on the network architecture demonstrated by Fetterolf et al. (1992), the LAN-WAN are interconnected by the transparent bridges. Each bridge has a fixed number of port and within the network system, the two bridges could be used if the number of connections exceed number of ports on the bridges. Thus, within the LAN-WAN connection, WAN has line interface that consists of Tl lines (1.5 Mb), and DDS lines (2.4-56 kb). Despite the benefits of derived from using the bridges for the interconnection of LAN, the routing algorithms of bridges is relatively unsophisticated.

On the other hand, Xu, Papavassilio & Narayana (2004) take different position by pointing out that many organizations have started deploying WLANs (Wireless local area networks) for the network needs. "The IEEE 802.11 speci-cation is becoming the de facto standard for deploying WLANs. However the high data rates achieved by contemporary WLAN technologies are restricted to very short ranges." (P 460). To increase the range of access point of WLAN, the authors propose layer-2 bridging architecture. The bridging architecture aims to address the hotspot communication problem and allow large number of users to have access to network connection. From the performances evaluation, it is believed that layer-2 bridging provides a significant improvement for WLAN compared to a conventional 802.11.

Khalil et al. (1995) demonstrated the methodology that Bellcore organization used to connect WAN topology through LANs. In a contemporary technological environment, LAN plays important role in the network environment and WAN provides distributed network application that connects multiple LANs technologies over large geographical areas. In the last few decades, several organizations make use of different WAN technologies ranging from X.25 of operating rates of 56 Kbits/s to SMDS, BISDN operating to establish scalable network connections. Additionally, many organizations widely use the Ethernet LANs to establish connection on the same geographical area. However, Bellcore organization upgraded the existing LAN and a WAN technology to increase the network bandwidth from 10Mb/s to 100 Mb/s. Bellcore facilitates the modification of the company current network to achieve the following goals:

To support the growing need of network connection within the organization.

To improve the network reliability for the organization

To eliminate the isolation that the company is currently facing.

To enhance reliable protocol using FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface).

Guillen and Chacon (2009) in their own case demonstrate the use of VoIP over the traditional WAN and LAN environment. The use of VoIP is growing in the contemporary business environment and VoIP provides the cost effective and reliable voice communication for many organizations. The growing use of VoIP is due to the quality of service (QoS) that it provides for the enhancement of the organizational efficiency. Despite the benefits derived from the use of VoIP, the authors argue that VoIP is characterized by the delay, packet loss and jitter in its parameters, which affect its quality of service.
