The environmental impact audit is required in certain industries. However, it is becoming standard practices in industries where it is not required as well. The product Life Cycle has a tremendous impact on the environmental impact of the company. Products that have a short life cycle, or that are not recyclable have a greater environmental impact than those with longer life cycles. One of the key challenges being faced by accountants is how to quantify the impact of the product life cycle. This research explores current theory and practice in this specialized area of accounting.

Introduction

Purpose

Long before the BP oil spill, consumers driven by concerns over the greenhouse gases and other environmental issues, began placing pressure on businesses to consider the impact of their operations on the environment. This pressure led to the development of environmental auditing practices and the need to include them in the strategic plan of the organization. Environmental auditing is viewed as a positive activity that can have an effect on the competitive advantage of the company. The following literature review will examine evidence that supports the thesis that environmental auditing has quantifiable tangible and intangible benefits on the company. The purpose of this literature review will be to examine the importance of conducting an environmental impact audit and current approaches for doing so.

Research Questions

The purpose of this research study is to explore the current state of research into the product life cycle and its impact on the environmental impact audit. In order to address the current issues in the topic, the literature review will attempt to address the following research questions?

1. Why should businesses conduct an environmental impact audit?

2. What are the issues and concerns that must be considered in conducting the audit?

3. What is the current state of research in this area?

4. What trends can be expected in future research regarding this topic?

Methodology

The methods developed by a particular company for conducting an environmental impact audit are unique to both the industry and the organization. Abundant literature has become available on this topic over the past several years as a result of new regulations and political pressure fueled by concerns over the environment. This research will examine trends in literature regarding environmental impact audits and its impact on the accounting profession.

Literature Review

In recent years, a plethora of literature has been published on the importance of conducting an environmental impact audit. The methods for conducting he audit are different for every industry and every business entity. This has become a highly specialized field in the accounting profession. Determining what to include and how to place a meaningful value on it is the key problem. The product life cycle has emerged as a central component of the environmental impact audit. The following literature review will explore current state of the art theory on how to place value on the product life cycle.

Why Conduct an Environmental Audit?

Every business is a producer of something, whether it is a product or service. The purpose of business is to produce a product or service that can be sold to generate revenues. Every business is a producer and a consumer. Likewise, every business generates some type of waste. It is easy to see how a manufacturing plant fits into this category, but it is more difficult to understand how a business such as a bank falls into this category. However, every business generates waste in some manner and has an impact on the environment. Every widget produced and every paper shredded eventually ends up as waste. In addition, waste is generated through the consumption of goods during the manufacturing process.
