[. . .] It is an erroneous image that all Asian-Americans drive luxury cars and live in posh neighborhoods. Although, as a whole, they are economically successful compared to other minority groups, however, many live far below the poverty level and are employed in menial jobs with no chance of future advancement (Taylor 47).

This workaholic, model minority, stereotype "deindivduates all members of a group, those who conform as well as those who rebel" (Taylor 47). According to the expectancy theory, minorities tend to behave within the expectations of established stereotypes, a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, the stereotype of Asian-Americans as intellectually and technologically gifted works "against assimilation of nonconformists who do not fit into the high-achievement mold, such as artists or persons not interested in math or science" (Taylor 47). Moreover, many Asian-Americans would prefer to be viewed as smart and successful Americans and non-stereotypical. Thus, although, the model minority image is a positive stereotype, it offends both conformist and nonconformist Asian-American because it ignores individual variability (Taylor 47).

Racial oppression and national oppression are distinguished by the enforcing group's composition. Under national oppression, "the ruling power is able to maintain its dominance only by coopting a stratum of the subject population into the system of social control," thus, it requires the recognition and nurturing of social divisions (Ignatiev 236).

Racial oppression relies on the support of subjugated classes within the dominant group, a support that depends on the conferring of a favored racial status on its most degraded member" (Ignatiev 236). It also involves the non-recognition and extirpation of social divisions of the population. "In Ireland, racial oppression made tribal chiefs no greater than cattle herders...In America, it made all indigenous people, from chief to farmer, into 'Indians,' and all those of African descent, from king to peasant, into 'Negroes'" (Ignatiev 236). Ellison writes in his epilogue, "America is woven of many strands; I would recognize them and let it so remain. It's 'winner take nothing' that is the great truth of our country or of any country. Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat. Our fate is to become one, and yet many...This in not prophecy, but description" (Ellison 577).

Invisibility exists in the nooks and cracks of society everywhere. People are passed by everyday, judged everyday and in every way. Unfortunately stereotyping is a reality of society. However, no matter how positive a stereotype image may be, it has negative consequences, not only for those who get locked in a labeled box, but for those who use the label, for they never see the individual apart from the group whole. As long as stereotypes exist, so will the invisible man.

The information in this article helped to establish an analytical approach to one race's dominance over another. It also showed that stereotyping is deep rooted in history throughout the world, often turning chiefs into slaves.
