Leadership (Hospitality Management)

This report will discuss the effective leadership style and motivational factor in hospitality management, particularly managing Red Sea Restaurant given their established culture and work environment.

Currently, Red Sea Restaurant is in need of Restaurant Manager who will contribute his or her expertise in attaining consistent, if not, exceeding, quality service performance. Qualifications for the position are ascertaining proper execution of operational duties, delegating tasks, boosting staff's moral and ensuring all are in accordance to standards, among others.. Applicants which passed the screening process are Grace Hannaford and Ronan Atkins

Selecting candidates that would fit the qualifications is a very critical step. This could lead to either success or failure of the team which could have a good or adverse effect in the business. After careful assessment of the two candidates' work experience, view and practice of leadership style and motivational aspects, it was established that Grace Hannaford will fill in the position.

This was decided on regards to her managing style which fits perfectly on the environmental and cultural setting the restaurant has established. She has leadership skills which focus on relationship and communication. She promotes growing connections among and between individuals that permit collective, collaborative thinking and action. She motivates and joins forces of personnel to articulate a common vision and set goals using material assets in support to conceive and implement plans of action.

INTRODUCTION

Red Sea, located in AOI Hotel, is a well-known restaurant for their food and service. It features variety of traditional dishes, as well as some exotic dishes, from which to choose. All of these are made fresh upon ordering so there can be a short wait. But art takes time and you won't be disappointed. Your taste buds would experience ultimate satisfaction in every dish serve on the table.

Confused which from the menu should you order? Don't hesitate to approach any of the friendly staff in the restaurant. They will be happy to explain any of the dishes or make suggestions.

Red sea is composed of efficient staff who are familiar and well-trained with their job. They are individuals who work as a team to achieve a common goal of maximum performance and good service. At present, Red Sea Restaurant is looking for a Restaurant Manager who will be responsible in operational duties, financial analysis and managing the restaurant crew.

There are two potential candidates on this job. Two leadership theories and motivational theories we will be tackling in the following portion of the report will be some of the basis in selecting who will be the best candidate to occupy the managerial position.

FINDINGS

Leadership theories appropriate for the position of the restaurant manager.

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes.

Two of the various theories applicable in Red Sea wherein crew members are well- established, reliable and proficient with their work are Situational Leadership Theory and Bass' Transformational Leadership.

Situational Leadership Theory converses that the best action of the leader depends on a range of situational factors. Factors that affect these decisions include motivation and capability of group members. In this theory, there is no absolute rule or uniform treatment in every situation.

Vroom and Yetton created a normative model which focuses on the importance of "decision acceptance." In this instance, they defined procedure of decision-making in five which were as follows:

A1: Leader takes known information and then decides alone.

A2: Leader gets information from followers, and then decides alone.

C1: Leader shares problem with followers individually, listens to ideas and then decides alone.

C2: Leader shares problems with followers as a group, listens to ideas and then decides alone.

G2: Leader shares problems with followers as a group and then seeks and accepts consensus agreement.

The first two are autocratic (A1 and A2), the next two is consultative (C1 and C2), and the last one is group based (G2). This is an effective method in a restaurant business considering manager has to deal with diverse situations.

When decision quality is important and the decision is not likely to result from an autocratic decision then G2 is best. G2 can be applicable in situations like brain storming on how to resolve customer-related issues and on decisions on operational activities

In cases wherein staff have useful and valuable information decisions, manager may opt to share information to his/her team (C1 or C2) like formulating job schedule, shuffling the team or making job rotation.

In decision involving financial analysis and budgeting, manager may opt to decide and limit information to him/her since he/she is more familiar and experienced in this area.

In cases wherein decision acceptance is important and subordinates are unlikely to coordinate, autocratic method maybe useful. This system can be applicable when staff are resisting to the management of new manager.

Limitations on this theory can be the manager's perception on the situation. The leader's perception of himself/herself and other factors such as stress and mood can also modify his/her behavior. We have to take in consideration that he/she must be well aware and can objectively see and decide the issues at hand.

Bass' Transformational Leadership Theory discusses on how leaders or managers affects his followers or subordinates. In this type of theory, he identified ways in which a manager can transform his staff:

Increasing their awareness of task and value - the manager sets out the standards and expectations to each individual and to the team. This is the phase where objectives are set to achieve set goals. There is a vision created on what the manager and the group would want to achieve as a team.

Getting them to focus first on team or organizational goals, rather than their own interests - This is where the "We" comes first before "I." Alignment of goals, personally and as a team, is patterned through the vision created by the team.

Activating their higher-order needs. - Prioritization is the key to accomplishing a well-done, two-thumbs up job. This is where the manager sets out the department's goals in line with the vision and mission of the Company as a whole. In here, department's goal and personal goals are discussed and lead to alignment with that to the Company's to achieve maximum result. Manager can obtain the team's commitment by giving primary attention on their needs too. This may be accomplished through coaching, mentoring and motivating staff.

Working with a transformational manager can be a wonderful and uplifting experience. They put passion and energy to everything. They care about you and want to succeed. This can be a very motivating experience to the staff of the manager knowing that they would have an optimistic career path.

One of the traps of Transformational Leadership is that passion and confidence can easily be mistaken for truth and reality. Whilst it is true that great things have been achieved through enthusiastic leadership, it is also true that many passionate people have led the charge right over the cliff and into a bottomless chasm. Just because someone believes they are right, it does not mean they are right.

Paradoxically, the energy that gets people going can also cause them to give up. Transformational Leaders often have large amounts of enthusiasm which, if relentlessly applied, can wear out their followers.

Both of these theories can suitable for the position and in selecting applicant.

Situational Theory makes you choose of the probable path in dealing with issues at hand. Managers do not only need to have one focus and make a definitive decision but he/she would have choices and flexibility given the situation.

Transformational Theory on the other hand can be very motivational on the part of the workforce. Knowing that the staff of Red Sea is very capable and proficient, it would be very effective to have a manager with specific vision and proficiency with the tasks at hand. By developing a team spirit, he/she will be able to employ the organization or department.

Both have positive and negative traits as well but considering in both instances that management and staff would have a voice with concerned issues, the Red Sea Restaurant business would likely succeed.

Motivational Theories

Motivation is an essential characteristic that managers must strive to achieve from their employees. Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory is a comprehensive model particularly discussing about motivation in the workplace. It teach us a great deal about the methodology behind a person's reason for doing what they do, and both can be applied by managers to enable them to motivate employees so that they can reach aspirations at a high level performance in line with those of organization.

Motivation-hygiene Theory brings more humanity and caring in the workplace. According to this theory, certain factors truly motivate ('Motivator') whereas others tend to lead to dissatisfaction ('hygiene factors'). It shows that satisfaction and dissatisfaction at work nearly… [END OF PREVIEW]
