In today's modern global society the emphasis has shifted from a service-based society into one that requires knowledge and skills, especially in the domain of creative thinking and problem-solving. As a student in today's society it is important to acquire postsecondary training or education to gain the skills required to have the best opportunity at success in the highly competitive global job market. Education professors Martha McCarthy and George Kuh have argued that learners need education to function effectively in today's global society that promotes critical and creative thinking (2006). McCarthy and Kuh also believe that learning institutions are under more scrutiny today than ever before and that employers and university faculty members have the impression that many high school graduates lack the knowledge, academic skills, and practical competencies to perform well in college or work environments (2006). The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) has conducted research to determine better the level of skills people need necessary to enter the job market (Horn & Schaffner, 2003). SCANS has proposed that the ability to perform job duties effectively depends on several key factors (Horn & Schaffner, 2003). First, the employees need to have a foundation of basic skills, higher order thinking skills as well as diligent application of personal qualities (Horn & Schaffner, 2003). The basic skills include reading, writing, arithmetic, speaking, and listening (Horn & Schaffner, 2003). Problem-solving, reasoning, and creative thinking constitute higher order thinking abilities and the personal qualities include responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, integrity, and honesty (Horn & Schaffner, 2003). This means that employees in today's global society must have a wide arrangement of skills to achieve his or her daily job. The better prepared an individual is, especially through education and training, the more opportunities he or she will have to acquire more than just the basic skills, and as SCANS had reported critical thinking, creative ideas, and problem-solving are important to achieve prosperity in the workforce.

The idea of higher order thinking is not a new concept, but with No Child Left Behind's legislation governing the public school systems and pushing critical thinking and problem solving to the side in exchange for high stakes testing, more researchers have begun to study the effects of higher order thinking on learners. No Child Left Behind's legislation of education and its system of high stakes testing are ineffective, broken, and in need of major repairing.

The educational system in the United States needs a revamping by refocusing on problem-solving and higher order thinking skills. The United States stresses a well trained workforce but to achieve this goal the number of university graduates must begin to grow. The United States has many issues in education that are deeply rooted because many of the citizens lack the necessary higher order thinking skills to compete in a global job market.

A global workforce needs educated workers who can think critically and creatively. The American education system's secondary schools and universities need to collaborate for the betterment of society. American organizations and businesses must continue to voice their concerns to the United States Departments of Education and Labor because they often have employment opportunities not able to be filled by American workers. In a country in which unemployment is rising, and the economy is slumping one would think that the proper education of the citizens would be a major concern. Higher order thinking and problem-solving are skills that must be re-introduced in the high schools and built upon at the university.
