Database Search for Biochemistry Breakthroughs With Celiac Disease

When using database tools to determine up-to-date information on a health topic, it is essential to know how to search. In general, there are three types of articles to consider, primary articles are those that present new research and are found in medical journals (McMillan, 2010). Secondary sources are those that summarize and compare existing data. Opinion sources are those that evaluate the current data and interpret it. All three of these sources are vital to ensure an ideal research background in a topic (Fraenkel, 1993). TOPIC: Essay on Literature Searches Assignment

The initial search was run in CINAHL. The search is open text and open date using the words Celiac Disease Biochemistry. This initial search retrieved 10,100 results. The first article listed is titled Identification of tissue transglutaminase as the autoantigen of celiac disease and is dated 1995. In order to trim down the results and ensure that the articles are truly the latest information on the topic, the date range is now changed to since 2013. This reduces the amount of articles to 238. The first listed article is titled Gluten-sensitive enteropathy coincides with decreased capability of intestinal T cells to secrete IL-17 and IL-22 in a macaque model for celiac disease. This article is published in the journal of Clinical Immunology and appears to be primary source article. The second article listed for the topic is Differentiation between Celiac Disease, Nonceliac Gluten Sensitivity, and Their Overlapping with Crohn's Disease: A Case Study. This study is a secondary source as it simply analysis existing cases without presenting any new information. The third resource listed is titled Celiac Disease: The New Proposed ESPGHAN Diagnostic Criteria Do Work Well In a Selected Population. This article is an opinion or news source detailing recent breakthroughs and listing further articles that discuss those breakthroughs.
