Blocks, stages, and methods of creative decision making

In order to make creative decisions, the managers of the facility need to understand the blocks, stages and methods of creative decision making. There are three blocks of creative decision making are perceptual, cultural and emotional blocks. Perceptual blocks are those which are caused by not using all the senses in observing and investigating the obvious and the difficulty in establishing cause and effect relationships between the aspects under consideration. Cultural blocks are those which overemphasize the competition and create a disbelief in open-ended exploration and fantasy. Emotional blocks are the fear of mistakes, distrust and lack of critical examination of all aspects under consideration. These blocks should be understood in order to prevent them from causing problems for the manager in the decision-making process Hellriegel, Slocum, & John W. Slocum, 2010()

There are five stages of creative decision making that should be taken into consideration. The first is the preparation stage where the manager thoroughly investigates the issue at hand. The second is the concentration stage where the manager focuses all their energies and resources to identifying the potential solutions to the problem. The third stage is the incubation stage where the manager internally orders information and resources for the decision-making process. The fourth stage is the illumination stage where the manager assesses each alternative to see which is best applicable for the problem. The last stage is the verification stage where the alternative is tested to see if it fits the problem Hellriegel et al., 2010()

The method that is most applicable for the situation is the De Bono's lateral thinking method whereby the manager deliberately generates new ideas to help the situation either as an individual or as a team. This will then be coupled with vertical thinking where the generated ideas are assessed to find the best possible alternative.

Environmental and strategic factors that affect the organizational design

Competition is the major factor in the organization's environment that affects the organizational design. This is because it impacts the marketing strategy and positioning of the organization as well as other decisions such as investment options and strategic partnerships in order for the organization to gain competitive advantage. Resources such as raw materials, human resources and capital are also environmental factors which affect organizational design. This is because they are scarce and their use needs to be optimized which will affect the design of the organization.

There are also strategic factors that are considered in organizational design. First are the goals and objectives of the organization. This ensures that the organization understands its purpose and that this is clear. Second is the structure of the organization such as size, internal and external relationships, policies and procedures. Third is the specialization of the organization which outlines the products and services offered and how the various activities in the organization integrate. Centralization or decentralization is also a strategic factor since it influences the decision-making process in the organization. Coordination is also a strategic factor since it influences the integration of the various departments in the organization and how they work together towards the goals and objectives of the organization. Formalization is also a strategic factor since it influences how the policies and procedures in the organization are set and how they create the balance between vertical and horizontal integration within the organization.
