The relationship between Theseus and Hippolyta seems throughout the play to be the solid and stable, a true instrument of orientation for other mortal couple, notably Hermia and Lysander. Opposed to the latter's more idealistic love, the solidity of Theseus and Hippolyta's love is probably due to the personality of the two characters. Strong and stable, mature to the point of extreme rationality, the two have been able to define the terms of their relationship, understand what these terms are and the boundaries that these terms define. This means that they are able to tackle the problems that appear between them much easier than any of the other couples, because they have a simple set of rules by which they are able to abide and make their relationship functional.

Most likely, an important element in the defining of their relationship is the fact that their romance seems to build on itself rather than simply explode at some point. While rather distant in the beginning of the play, no doubt because of the fact that they had fought on different sides in battle, there romance and relationship thoroughly grows throughout the play into final marriage.Download full Download Microsoft Word File
