¶ … Midsummer Night's Dream

Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night's Dream uses the play inside of the play to make a positive statement about the acting profession. When the characters watch the play at the finale of Midsummer, they laugh and make fun of what they see, but they do not realize that it is themselves that are foolish because they cannot recognize themselves in the play. Shakespeare employs this ending, nearly the whole of Act V, in order to show how actors are able to see the truth in humans and thus interpret the actions that they see. Undoubtedly, Shakespeare was pointing out the non-actors' folly at the end of Midsummer, yet the non-actors were completely blind to it. Shakespeare seems to be saying that artists (i.e. actors) have a very special and important job in the world -- to show individuals a little piece of themselves as a representation on a stage so that they can learn from it -- that is, if they can recognize it.

Midsummer takes mostly takes place inside the mystical woods full of fairies and other creatures; however, what the play seems to say about humans relationship with animals is one that is rather dangerous -- that is, it appears that humans are in constant danger of becoming animal-like or even bestial and because of this, humans must always be watched closely. This can be seen in Bottom's transformation when his head is replaced with that of an ass -- only to make Titania fall in love with him; this is showing how the animal inside themselves and in others tempts humans -- and, once again, this needs to be policed.Download full Download Microsoft Word File
