Over the last several years, the issue of music therapy has been increasingly brought to the forefront. Part of the reason for this, is because music has been used for over 70 thousand years to help transform the mood of the individual and the way that they are looking at the world around them. In education, music has been playing a vital role in helping students to open their minds and think creatively. When they are exposed to these ideas on a regular basis is when there will be a transformation in their attitudes and ideas.

A good example of this can be seen with a study that was conducted by University of California at Irvine. What happened was, researchers wanted to see the overall impact of music on the individual's thoughts and behavior through continuous exposure to music. This was accomplished by surveying three and four-year-old students, who were subdivided into two different groups. In the first group, students were exposed to different kinds of music and they discussed how it made them feel. While the second group, did not receive any kind of music therapy (i.e. The independent variable). The results were that the students who were a part of group one, was able to score 80% higher in comparison with others who were a part of the independent variable.

This is significant, because it is showing how music therapy can help students to effectively focus on a wide variety of tasks. As this is assisting them in using both parts of their brain and it is giving them greater amounts of flexibility. To fully understand the impact of music therapy on student achievement requires examining the basic definition, how it can be used in an educational environment and the different ways that is has been utilized in the classroom. Once this occurs, is when we will be able to see the long-term impact of music therapy on student attitudes and ideas.

A Basic Definition of Music Therapy and how it can be utilized in an Educational Setting

Music therapy is defined as the process in which a therapist or educator will work with everyone to experience the full effects of what they are listening to or singing. The way that this is accomplished is through having each person involved as part of the music that is being composed. This can be conducted with someone singing, playing an instrument or simply listening to the music itself.

These activities involve the individual participating as a part of the process. Where, they are using their creative imagination to be able to see different aspects of it and understand how it is impacting their views about the world around them. This is important, because it showing how music therapy can be used as a tool to effectively influence the mindset of the individual. This is when they will begin to react differently to the sounds that they are singing, playing or hearing.

However, it is important to note that music therapy is different from music education. As, music education is considered to be working with someone to understand the various concepts and ideas of music. While music therapy is when we are using musical experiences to influence how a person thinks and feels about the world around them. Once this takes place, is when there will be a change in the individual's psychological state. This is the point that there will be a change in their attitude and views about what is happening. These elements are important, because they are showing how music therapy is used as a tool to change the underlying state of mind in a person. Over the course of time, this will help them to be more focused and productive.

Music Therapy in Education

Like what was discussed earlier, the use of music education can have a tremendous impact on child development. This is because it has been shown to be an effective tool for helping students to build their cognitive and creative thinking skills. Evidence of this can be seen with observations from Music Therapy in Health and Education (1993). This source found that when music therapy is used in the classroom it can help all of the students to learn more effectively. The reason why, is due to the fact that the active participation of everyone (through listening or contributing) will help them to be more open minded and it will change their underlying mental state. As each student will be happier, focused and positive about the material that is being presented to them. Once this occurs, is when there will be change in the classroom with everyone open to new concepts. In most cases, these individuals will see an increase in academic performance of at least 50%.

While at the same time, they are experiencing changes in their underlying mental attitude and the impact that it is having on them. Once this occurs, is when there will be a transformation in the way they are looking at the material that is presented to them and the effect that it is having on their lives. This is important, because it is showing how music therapy can be a vital tool that will help educators to reach out to students. Over the course of time, this will lead to a transformation in their views about the material they are learning and how they are looking at the world around them.

Using Background Music in an Education Environment

Inside the classroom there have been calls for using background music as way to be able to motivate student. The reason why, is because this is providing them with an avenue that will help them to concentrate more effectively and to open their minds. Over the course of time, this will result in higher achievement scores with everyone more focused on accomplishing a host of objectives.

There are a variety of sources that are confirming how this can help to enhance the learning environment inside the classroom. A good example of this can be seen with observations from Hall (1952). He found that when there is some kind of classical music that is played in the background. The students' are more focused on subject matter and they have higher levels of creativity. Once this takes place, is when the educator can be able to reach out to everyone through the higher levels of learning comprehension that are in place. This is the point that they can begin to introduce ideas that will create excitement and a passion for learning a host of concepts throughout the school year.

Moreover, Kiger (1989) found that when music is played in the background. The students are able to have higher levels of reading comprehension. The reason why, is due to the fact that the music is changing their perceptions about the material that is being presented to them and the impact that it is having on their state of mind. Once this takes place, is when everyone is more open minded and will experience greater amounts of knowledge. In reading, this is helping each person to concentrate on the concepts that are being presented. These sources are important, because they are showing how music therapy can be an effective tool when it is used in an educational environment. This is the point that there will be a change in how everyone is interacting with each other and learning new ideas.
