He feels happy in being accredited for his accomplishments and is proud of himself as well. His pragmatic realism is depicted in his social and political attitudes. He is quite tough-minded and hardheaded fellow in comparison to his counterparts (Costa et al., 2000).


This individual depicts rationality in decision making, which confirms his efficiency and sensibility. He is punctual, neat and well organized and meets his obligations well. Thus, he is reasonably reliable and dependable. He possesses a moderately high need for achievement, but he can keep his work aside to dedicate time to recreation. He is cautious to a great extent and thinks well before taking actions. He finishes the tasks started by him, which depicts self-discipline in his personality (Costa et al., 2000).

Personality Correlates: Some Possible Implications

Research depicts that the NEO-PI-R ™ scales are linked with a variety of psychological variables. Such correlates are instrumental in making possible implications for personality profiles. This is due to the fact that individuals scoring high on a trait have a higher probability of scoring high on measures of the trait's correlates.

The following information caters in understanding the functioning of individual in a number of areas. However, it does not substitute direct measurement. For example, if a complaint is made in medical field, an inventory of medical complains needs to be maintained along with the NEO-PI-R (Costa et al., 2000).

Coping and Defenses

This person does not react with ineffective responses like escapist fantasies, self-blame and hostile attitude towards others in dealing with the stresses of daily life. He is more inclined towards using humor and less inclined to using faith in losses, threats and challenges as compared to most of the adults. Moreover, he possesses a lower probability of using direct action and positive thinking in catering problems (Costa et al., 2000).

Somatic Complaints

This person is quite neutral in determining the seriousness of his own medical problems. He neither exaggerates; neither underestimates physical symptoms and responds to physical illness and problems in a normal way (Costa et al., 2000).

Psychological Well-being

Even though the mood of this individual will depend on the circumstances he has been in, but in general terms he experiences a normal course of pessimistic and optimistic feelings. This particular person is mostly happy and contended with his life. This person is more open to different experience that is why his mood is often unusual as compared to an average person (Costa et al., 2000).

Cognitive Processes

Such a person has the ability to bring about different ideas, thoughts, decisions and arguments which are very much unique. This person is open to experience; therefore he performs better than all others in tests and other life situations. We can say this because such a person often comes up with wonderful solutions when problems come in his way. The hobbies and the side work performed by such people are often considered to be of creative nature (Costa et al., 2000).

Interpersonal Characteristics

There are a number of theories on interpersonal traits that revolve around the status and love. If we talk about this person with respect to love and status, then we see him as being modest, cold, submissive and reserved. He tends to have a low standing as far as love and status are concerned (Costa et al., 2000).

Needs and Motives

While researchers were finding matters related to personality, they came across a number of human psychological needs. The following needs were found in the respondents at high levels; harm/danger avoidance, affiliation, enjoyment on the sight of luxury and beauty, intellectual stimulation and nurturance. The following needs were found in the respondents at very low levels; play, change and abasement (Costa et al., 2000).

NEO Personality Inventory-3

Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) - which comprised of questions regarding the Five Factor Model (FFM), is now available in an updated form by the name of NEO-

PI-3. It is basically a brief measure which comprises of five major domains of personality (Openness, Neuroticism, Extraversion and Conscientiousness) and the six facets which describes each of these domains.


It is used while counseling is being given to the adults as well as to the younger ones.

It is used in industrial and business settings.

Used in Psychological research (like sports and studies).


Many things have been revised so that understanding of the matters become easier for younger people and even for those who are not much educated.

There are separate norms available for young people (having age somewhere in between 12 and 20) and for adults.

In order to provide proper description of personality for educational, clinical and counseling purposes, NEO-PI-3 has been designed. The facts which were mentioned in the older version (NEO PI-R) are retained in the revised one but with additional new information. There are 240 personality items present in the revised version along with one validity item. All the items were structured in such a way that it became convenient for the reader to read and comprehend. To be more accurate, there were 37 items which were edited to make it easier for the young people and for those who are not well educated.

In NEO-PI-3 five domains are mentioned, which portray a general picture of personality, but the detailed analysis of these domains is given by the six facets. The facets and the five factors are as follows:

Neuroticism (Hostility, Anxiety, Self-Consciousness, Depression, Vulnerability, Impulsiveness)

Extraversion (Gregariousness, Warmth, Activity, Assertiveness, Positive Emotions, Excitement-Seeking,)

Openness to Experience (Aesthetics, Fantasy, Actions, Feelings, Values, Ideas,)

Agreeableness (Modesty, Trust, Altruism, Compliance, Tender-Mindedness, Straightforwardness)

Conscientiousness (Self-Discipline, Competence, Dutifulness, Achievement-Striving, Deliberation, Order)

Hand Scoring

The material that is required for hand scoring includes a manual, an answer sheet, one Form-S test booklet which is reusable, one feedback sheet per person and FORM-S or FORM-R Adolescent or Adult profile sheet. Adolescent profile sheet is made available only when Exam kit is purchased.

Internet Scoring

At sigma, one can find NEO-P1-3. This available platform is based on online testing, which allows individual to perform both immediate remote and local testing. One also has access to a variety of tests and results.
