SAMPLE EXCERPT:

[. . .] The article gave several different evidence-based practices that could be used to further diversity in nursing education.

2. Assess instructional materials given to patients or students. Is it appropriate for a multicultural curriculum/audience? To what extent to instructional materials support inclusiveness. Are materials reflective of diversity? Are materials free of gender, culture, religious and ethnic bias? Can hospital/academic policies be implemented fairly for all learners?

It is difficult to make a blanket statement regarding the appropriateness of nursing material as a whole, but healthcare organizations realize the importance of inclusiveness so most materials do respect that quality of the society. The materials assessed for this question gave specific attention to diverse groups of people, and there was additional material that dealt with specific groups if that was required. The receptionist was very helpful with regards to material that could be used for people from various cultures. It seems from the examples gleaned, that all situations can be covered.

3. How can the concept of transcultural nursing be applied to the assessment and teaching of clients and students from culturally diverse backgrounds?

The stated goal of transcultural nursing is to promote understanding between cultures. One model "includes five components: communication, time, space, health beliefs and practices, and environment" (Billings & Halstead, 2011, 305). This model would be able to produce nursing instruction that could be accepted by a very diverse group of nurses, and help them work together in a cohesive workforce.

4. Analyze the socioeconomic reasons for the changing demographics of student nurses, and project how the changing demographics of the nursing workforce will impact health care delivery.

More students are coming from poorer regions now because nursing is a profession that offers a better life financially and gives the practitioner a positive reputation in the community. Many people have recently gone back to school to become nurses, but because of the growing minority population nurses are frequently being recruited from areas of the population that have traditionally been underserved. This recruitment pattern will lead to a more diverse workforce and better overall care for patients.

Module 5

1. How can faculty cultivate an environment that positively contributes to learning and proactively responds to student misconduct?

Billings and Halstead (2011) noted that nursing faculty report very few incidents of gross misconduct, but that the stress related to many of the programs had caused some issues (244). The authors listed several methods of responding to misconduct some of which could be labeled administrative and other relating to atmosphere. The administrative are such things as reminding the students of the code of conduct, while the teacher is responsible to create an atmosphere in which students feel safe and trusted. The primary means though is to have a strict code of conduct and ensure that the students understand the consequences of their actions.

2. Develop an expressive writing exercise designed to decrease threat apperception in the clinical environment.

An expressive exercise is designed to allow the person to demonstrate how they feel about a situation through the words they put on paper. The exercise would start with the nurse writing about the threats that they perceive in the clinical setting. The nurse would then be asked to read over their words to discover their fears. Then the nurse would be asked to think of a specific situation and try to see that situation from the person causing the perceived threat. They would then write about that person's feelings and how they could offer the support the person needed.

3. As faculty, you have become aware that one of your students during the ninth week of the semester went from performing quite well with good attendance, submitting all assignments on time and well done and displaying a generally collegial demeanor to suddenly missing class, not turning in weekly assignments, and not returning e-mails. What is the best way to respond to this student?

Obviously, there is something amiss in the student's personal life that is affecting their professional dealings. The nursing student is going to have to learn how to deal with both a stressful job and a potentially stressful home life. Primarily, the instructor needs to offer as much support as is possible and appropriate. The student may need to restart the block at a later time when the situation has been dealt with. The instructor can also give the student resources that can help them work through the situation without jeopardizing their standing.

4. While grading a lab assignment you notice that four students appear to have submitted identical work to the extent that you have become concerned that the students may have presented other people's work as their own. What is the best way to approach this situation? What could you have done to avoid or minimize this type of incident?

Plagiarism in and of itself is not the problem here. The problem poor ethical decision-making demonstrated by the four students. Even the student who did the original work is in the wrong because s/he allowed others to use their work. The best way to handle this is to give them all zeros for the assignment, allow them to make it up for half credit, and give them a copy of the code of conduct and the specific violation. Also, warn them that if it happens again they will be dismissed from the program. The teacher could have avoided this by making the rules more clear.

Module 6

1. What evidence is available on the effectiveness of using simulation in support of learning? Summarize a current evidenced-based article that addresses some aspect of simulation in nursing education.

Simulation is used constantly in nursing education from the CPR dummies to computer simulations of various types. Research indicates that this is a very effective means of education also because it allows a hands-on approach to the field. The article in question looked at various evidence-based programs that have been used as simulation aids and how effective they were (Norman, 2012). The author found that research is proving that there is a significant increase in knowledge and skill when simulation is used as a tool, but that many of the studies conducted have used sample sizes that are too small due to their being qualitative in nature (Norman, 2012). The conclusion was that more research needs to be done.

2. Describe the various standards that have been established to ensure quality of health care information on the World Wide Web and access by special populations.

The main organization that has worked to determine standards for web-based information is the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP). The goal of the panel is to combine individuals in both the public and private sectors to provide guidance when it comes to dispersing healthcare information via the internet. Some of the standards have to do with health records, quality of healthcare and research (HITSP, 2012). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also offers distinct guidelines regarding the use and dissemination of healthcare information especially from its research facilities. The main goal of all of these organization is to make sure that the quality of information is not diminished.

3. Consider a recent teaching/learning event in which you were either the student or the faculty member. Describe the media that was used to support and deliver the instructional content. Critique the selection, delivery and appropriateness of the media used.

One recent lecture used PowerPoint as the main means of instruction. The instruction itself was valuable, but the presentation was difficult to follow and it seemed that the information could have been presented more effectively. PowerPoint allows the user to imbed other types of media and this is always helpful when teaching a class. Some of the illustrations would also have been better if they were spread over more slides. Many times people put too much information on each slide rather than spreading it out.

4. Think about your presentation style. In what ways do you already engage learners? How and where do you see yourself trying new approaches? How will you evaluate the success of these new strategies?

People want to be a part of the learning process or they are not going to learn as readily. My main contribution is to provide information and then act as a facilitator for the class as they discuss what has been said and how they can use it in clinical situations. I would like to use more media such as video and audio clips because it adds a dimension of engagement from the students. Success can be evaluated in the traditional ways by comparing the overall grades one class receives without the new type of instruction vs. what a class gets when given the new type of instruction.
