This is a pilot study intended for forming a test on the larger and more rigorous study of the experiences of nursing researchers. Reliability is the measure of consistency and accuracy within research methods for measuring research variables in a study. Reliability helps in the interpretation of statistical analysis results to find out the reliability of the results of studying a wide group (Polit & Beck, 2008). Validity takes a broader look at a research study focusing on the evidences to assure no biases exist and that the results are cogent and adequately grounded. Validity also looks at evidences of quality on independent variables within a research and that ensures that the results found in the research qualify for the improvement of nursing provision. Every nurse and researcher with a passion for the improvement of healthcare desires to use the best methods in the practice. However, doing this requires research for development of improved practices and proving of existing theories. This pilot study is one that is going to help the researcher in identification of possible challenges that the main research might face, and help in their tackling so they do not hinder the man research. The second hypothesis of the study is that there is possibility that interventions of aspects like the methods, costs and produces information for refining the real research present problems to nursing researchers during their studies. Through provision of information on acceptability, adequacy, suitability, appropriateness, intervention fidelity, intervention retention rate and safety of the intervention, there is effectiveness in research for development of information for use in making a subsequent research for the generation of practical information for nursing.

Literature Review

The experience of choosing the best research method to use for a study

Qualitative and quantitative researches are important to the field of research because they fit into studies of nursing sciences and practice for the development of best practices in the nursing field (Berman, Snyder, Kozier & Erb, 2008). The two research methods are different and unique in their designs of study, but both have important contributions to nursing. The advantage of the triangulation of research methods in nursing profession is that it is helping researchers and nurses in to integrate the both qualitative and quantitative research methods and paradigms (Polit & Beck, 2008). Integration of quantitative and qualitative research data within a study helps in offsetting shortcomings and challenges of the research approaches, as well as enhancing the validity of the results. Nurses who have undergone adequate training on how to use the research methods find it easy using either methods or integrating them into their research practice (Schelbred & Nord, 2007). On the contrary, those with inadequate skills fond research rigorous, boring and confusing because of the inability of understanding existing research terminologies.

Types of research methods

There are two types of research study methods, which nurses can use for a study (Berman, Snyder, Kozier & Erb, 2008). Qualitative and quantitative researches are the most used research methods in the field of research. Their use in nursing studies is for the development of best practices in the nursing field. The two research methods use different study paradigm in their designs of study, but both have important contributions to nursing. Quantitative research focuses on practicality of a data collected for research. There is numerical convention of the collected data after, which the there is the analysis and evaluation of results using statistical equations. Qualitative research on the other hand, is a general evaluation of emotional intelligence (Schelbred & Nord, 2007). It is a process through, which the researcher evaluates information subjectively. In qualitative researches, there is the analysis of narratives for the study, historical research and descriptive phenomenology. Researchers use quantitative research for assessing of quality of a research study. Researchers depend on reliability of research studies to find out the consistency and accuracy in studies (Polit & Beck, 2008). They also use validity to verify the results of study to shoe that the research study has evidence of assertion of the used methods, as well as vesting on the quality of the independent variables like the researching skills capacity. Any researcher in doing a nursing study must have an understanding of the differences of the different research methods to decide on the best for his or her practice (Law, Stewart, Letts, Pollack, Bosch, & Westmorland, 1998).

It is easy for skilled researchers to understand research terminologies, while, very frustrating for unskilled researchers understanding the same. Qualitative research has different terminology and criteria. Its methodology focuses on the trustworthiness of data for study for the creation of transferability, credibility, dependability and confirmability. These ensure consistency, objectivity, confidentiality and credibility. Through triangulation, the researcher draws conclusions constituting the truth. Quantitative research requires evaluation of multiple referents requiring definitions of multiple operational dependent variables for determining consistency of predicted results. Triangulation used in qualitative research, however, uses multiple data fro discussions, participants and observation for developing an understanding of a phenomenon (Law, Stewart, Letts, Pollack, Bosch, & Westmorland, 1998).

In quantitative research, there is the use of randomness in elimination of biases while in qualitative research there is the use of preference (Black, 2009). Therefore, there is no standardization of samples in quantitative research and randomness help in developing controls of variables and reduction of biases. Qualitative research uses information earlier gathered in the study for the refining of conceptualized ideas for development of independent judgments from the researchers in evaluating phenomenal complexities of research interest. Quantitative research also makes use of masking to control any possible biases, which may be present during the study. For qualitative research, instead of using controls, blinding and masking, it uses reflexivity to guard against the formation of any personal biases during a research (Polit, & Beck, 2005). Quantitative research also uses generalizability for assessing the extent of applying findings in other settings and groups. Contrary to this, qualitative research does not generalize findings, but look for understanding regarding information and means of improving the findings. Qualitative researchers further use thick descriptions to refer to research settings, observations and processes.

Experiences of skilled and unskilled nursing researchers

Those nurses with skills on research confirmed ease with designing their research studies. With adequate skills, conducting research within the ethical limits is manageable and achievable, unlike the experience nurses without researching skills have. It is a challenge for researchers without required knowledge making their way through the research requirements (Law, Stewart, Letts, Pollack, Bosch, & Westmorland, 1998). There are researches reporting experiences of frustration and despair whenever nurses find it hard conducting effective researches. With the advancements in the nursing field and need for the provision of quality nursing environment, nurses realize the need for improving their practice (Berman, Snyder, Kozier & Erb, 2008). Patients also demand for better nursing services and that makes those nurses without researching skills desperate for providing information for bettering their practice like patient relationships (Berman et al., 2008).

Research Method

This is a qualitative study of a phenomenon describing dependent and independent variables, as well as manipulation of study for testing the hypothesis. It adequately thrives at explaining the phenomenon of the study, focusing on the experiences of nurses conducting research (Berman, Snyder, Kozier & Erb, 2008). The study also has no comparison to another or any outcome predictions made because of other research. It adheres to qualitative research requirements by focusing on existing knowledge of the possibility of difficulties on conducting research without adequate knowledge and ease for the skilled researchers (Lilley, Harrington, & Snyder, 2007). The study requires a small sample of 10 nurses for the explanation of the phenomenon. Five of the nurses will be those who have conducted research in the past without any skills on best researching practices. The other five are nurses with adequate nursing skills and the ability of making their choices for the methods and means of conducting a professional research (Berman et al., 2008).

There will be recording of interviews as a consistent data collection method for qualitative research and through existing nursing background knowledge (Polit & Beck, 2008). The expectation of the research is to have the hypothesis defined by the thematic guide.
