The discussions showed that when the students gets exposure of the issue at hand before getting into the working environment. The subject of oppression needs the student to understand the framework and core standards and capabilities of social work. These include, understanding the differences in self and others, thus diversity. Secondly, is to implement respecting the differences in the society and thus challenging discrimination and oppression. Lastly, the framework also provides the student with the platform to learn to challenge cultural assumptions that influence the negative discrimination due to diversity in the society.

What did I learn?

It is my belief that this learning experience opened a new view of the scope of social worker. The subject of diversity and power distribution in the society is among the leading challenges facing the profession of social work. This clearly came out through the discussions we had in class, as well as the further readings I took. I learned that it is my responsibility as a practicing social worker to engage the framework of the profession to address the arising challenges in the process of offering services. The dilemma of the multicultural society is also a challenge to addressing the subject of oppression. The class discussion opened my understanding to engage positive working practices, such as the need to challenge fellow social workers who have oppressive thinking openly. Lastly, I learnt to address social issues after engaging from a multidirectional approach to have an elaborate understanding of the issue am addressing.

How did I learn it?

In my learning progress, I identify the contribution of various engagements in helping me to learn the above factors concerning my work. The process started with class discussions with peers and facilitators of the learning process. In this sense, the class discussions provided an opportunity to learn what and how others think, and accommodating their views and beliefs. This helped me to acknowledge and take up the challenge to accommodate diversity. Combining these class discussions with the readings from different course materials was another learning channel I applied. The learning materials such as books and articles about the subject helped me in growing the knowledge I had to what I have today.

Why does it matter?

Peace and peaceful co-existence between people of different cultural diversities and social status is a subject of world concern. Social work is just a small platform but with an immense responsibility and opportunity to help in addressing the issue of diversity in the society. Therefore, for this reason, I believe that the learning topic does matter a lot to me as an individual and society, as a whole unit. It is a significant topic of discussion, and it helps the social worker in their daily commitments, in the profession, significantly.

What will I do in the future, in light of it?

With the revelation from this learning experience, it is a challenge that I will take up to work towards the emancipation of my colleagues and the society in which I work. The lessons learnt are so practical that I will implement the activities that I know will aid in the process of addressing the subject of oppression and diversity in the society. I will commit to educating the people in the society to ensure I eliminate this social vice eating into the positive progress made by development so far.

Summary

The professional codes of ethics for the social work profession are clear and against oppression and wrong power exploitation. However, the social workers have challenges in implementing the ethics to the later due to challenges brought by societal settings and misconceptions. This topic and the learning process helped me to realize the need to take the challenge; and actively involve myself in emancipating the society and evading the evil of oppression along power divisions and diversity lines.
