TPS and its Evolution

As previously mentioned, the development and use of Toyota Production System was influenced by the need to address some of the challenges experienced by Toyota Motor Corporation with regards to operational efficiency. The system is an integrated approach to production processes in order to manufacture state-of-the-art, quality automobiles at affordable costs to different kinds of customers (Toyota Motor Manufacturing, n.d.). The approach helps in effective management of people, materials, and equipment while ensuring that employees work in a healthy and safe environment. Through this system, Toyota seeks to meet customers' expectations by utilizing high quality measures in manufacturing automobiles and becoming the model of corporate responsibility in the automotive sector. In this regard, there are four major purposes of Toyota Production System including production of high quality automobiles and services to customers and lessening operational costs through waste elimination. The other purposes are building the potential of every employee through trust, cooperation, and mutual respect as well as establishing flexible production standards based on demands in the market/industry (Art of Lean Inc., n.d.).

Toyota Production System is associated with some advantages and disadvantages relating to its use towards enhancing operational efficiency. Some of the advantages of TPS include eliminating unnecessary wastes in production processes, enhancing production processes, empowering employees to optimize quality, and establishing well-defined responsibilities for every member of the production system/process. In this regard, TPS is advantageous because of its emphasis on safety, quality, reduced costs, environmental friendliness, and on-time delivery. However, the disadvantages of this system include likelihood to overhaul entire business systems, increasing business risks in supply chain processes, and generating disruptions in business processes. Moreover, Toyota Production System is associated with high costs of implementation, customer dissatisfaction issues, employee resistance during implementation, and the need for mindset changes in order to be effective.

Since its development, Toyota Production System has continued to evolve based on the changes and demands in the business environment and its adoption by other business organizations to enhance operations and profitability. The system has evolved to a focus on lean manufacturing, which has now become a major factor in improving an organization's operations (Art of Lean Inc., n.d.). This evolution has contributed to the development of lean principles that entail the use of different tools and techniques to optimize human resources, time, and resources towards enhanced operational efficiency. This system has been successfully copied by other car manufacturers like Ford because of its role in eliminating waste and improving production.

In conclusion, Toyota Production System is one of the revolutionary systems that was developed to help enhance operational efficiencies in production processes. One of the major principles of this system is Genchi Genbutsu, which focuses on problem solving through practical experience rather than theoretical knowledge. This principle can be applied to other companies or organizations like Nike and Veterans Hospitals Affairs to address problems at the point of occurrence. Since its development, the system has continued to evolve and is currently considered as lean manufacturing, which is adopted by businesses to enhance productivity.
