Childhood is the most important stage of life for an individual, as it is the reflection of his personality as an adult, where most of the things that are learnt are an imitation of cultural aspects. It includes the views, traditions, symbolism and rites of the culture, which sequentially leaves a deep impression on the personalities of the individuals. These factors explicitly enlighten the fact that culture comprehensively develops and shapes the personality of an individual, which is accomplished by the process of learning rather than having an innate feature.

How is Culture and Personality Related?

From the time a human enters into the worlds, it is the cultural community (that consists of complete ball of wax starting from parents, siblings, family, neighborhood, culture) that creates the individual and his personality. Even though it is generally thought and said that humans are genetically equivalent, but this astonishingly also leads to the question that why are people of different societies and cultures so unique and dissimilar to one another. All these aspects indicate the fact that the study of culture and personality has different angles to analyze.

The journey of a human being starts when he or she is born. The family members especially the mother and father are the first and foremost agents of enculturation. As the child is towards the stage of maturing, he or she interacts with various other people such as siblings, grandparents, family members and neighbors of the society as succeeding agents into the enculturation process, which is purely dependent upon the cultural norms and values. This is the fundamental learning developed by the anthropologists so that on the basis of it they can gain further knowledge and acquaintance on the personality traits that is shaped by the culture (LeVine, p. 175-189).

It has also been widely and extensively argued by various theorists of the culture and personality school that personality patterns are extensively created by cultures. This is claimed due to the reason that the culture of an individual facilitates them in shaping their emotions, thoughts, behavior, values and norms that match up to their surroundings (LeVine, p. 247-262).

Extensive childrearing studies have been carried out in diverse and dissimilar societies in order to gain an insight on how culture and personality are related. The results have also been compared cross culturally to spot how people react in different manner to same situations. In addition, the researchers also intended to examine how distinct cultures affect the childrearing practices and adult personality types. The conclusion that was brought forward on the analysis of the analysis by these studies indicated that the characteristic of the person (which typically refers to their behavioral traits, emotions and thoughts) is heavily dependent upon the culture in which they have brought up (Triandis & Suh, p. 135-150).

The cultural differences and its impact on the personality can be explained from one of the studies, where it has come to notice that two civilizations (cultural groups) shared similar traits in genetic collection. However, the value systems of both of these groups had significant differences. Due to the differences in their value systems, the idea of a good man had a very different perception for both of the groups. As a result, researchers assert that personality of an individual has a lot to do with the culture (LeVine, p. 247-262).

Considering the relationship of culture and personality, it is believed that during the childhood period of life, a person develops certain needs, desires and drives that are based on the experiences that are achieved from the situations. The personality trait is developed that enables them to satisfy these drives. These desires are fulfilled in the adulthood period, which is only based on the criteria that his culture allows him to do. This means that indirectly and directly, culture shapes and forms the personality of an individual.

According to anthropologists, it is fascinating to state that during the course of gaining knowledge about the relationship between personality and culture, they have found that the more they try to understand a culture, the more they are able to be cognizant on the characteristics of a personality organization. This procedure initiates from the childhood knowledge that ultimately determines the adult personality within each society.

Several ecological theorists have evidently suggested the fact that experiences of the people based on specific culture socialization lead to different developmental outcomes. Even though one cannot ignore the fact that as the person grows and matures, his personal as well as social responsibilities increases parallel to the developmental changes that occur during the life cycle. The developmental changes are purely on the basis of the cultural specific experiences. This is usually due to the reason that the different cultures have their own set of beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that are considered desirable which makes up the socialization experiences, social norms, expectations and even educational experiences. Indeed, the different patterns of thinking on moral and social issues are also developed by culture-specific experiences (LeVine, p. 247-262).

Social scientists have brought the information to limelight that human personality has substantial psychological effects due to the cultural influence. This is particularly due to the reason that culture is a medium that is broadcasted and spread out by means of language, media messages, cultural practices and institutions, values and artifacts. Therefore, these elements deeply persuade the personality of an individual.

Few of the experts and theorists have also associated the relationship of culture and personality to a game, where the game is referred as culture (that is based on a set of rules and conditions) and the players are the individual personalities. The people who are the players have different options that they can select or pick different strategies or even violate some of its rules. This simply means that individuals follow the rules according to their personal preferences, frame of mind and specific situations, which usually differ from one another. In other words, cultural impact on all individuals is diverse and dissimilar to each other.

The significance of culture in shaping personality cannot be ignored, but at the same time, few of the anthropologists were quick to point out that individual members of the culture dynamically opt for way of life that suits their temperament, values, and philosophy of life. In addition, there are various aspects that are liked and disliked by individuals and even internalize them in different and diverse manner. Due to this reason, these theorists argued that real culture is the one that is flexible. Thus, it has been stated that individual can never be a mirror-image of the cultural pattern.

While on the other end of the spectrum, these anthropologists at the same time also realize and apprehend that culture still plays a substantial role of influencer on the personalities of individuals in situations, regardless of the fact that how strong needs and temperaments of an individual are. The cultural aspects constrain and curb the range of behavioral expressions of the individuals, as culture is deep rooted and embedded into their personalities. By looking at this perspective, personality of an individual is reflected as a product of combination of cultural demands and biological inclination.

Numerous sources of information has brought the fact to the forefront that Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Openness, and Neuroticism are the four personality dimensions that are usually measured by the anthropologists in order to determine the relationship between personality and culture. Studies in this regard apparently exhibits the fact that acculturation are extensively associated with these four personality dimensions. In addition, studies also indicate the fact that these personality dimensions have acquired strong cross-cultural validation (Triandis & Suh, p. 135-150).

The relationship of personality and culture can be well elucidated from one of the researches that have been conducted by a group of researchers. The primary aim of the study was to identify the relationship of cultures to personalities. This was accomplished by recording cognitive test scores of children in two different nations in vocabulary, reading, mathematics, and memory of words and numbers. The research noticeably demonstrated major differences that were brought about in human development due to diverse cultures and environment (Triandis & Suh, p. 135-150).

From numerous sources of information, anthropologists conclude that few characteristics of a personality that forms a basic personality type is present in every culture, which is usually the outcome of cultural influence and power on the individual. At the same time experts also highlight the fact that that these personality types changes with the change in cultural influences.
