[. . .] In addition to the promises the organizations seemed to offer to the character, her individual desire and expectation for success motivated her in the workplace. Although no tangible, promises emerged with respect to Andrea eventually becoming a reporter or a writer for "Runway Magazine," her natural expectation to get such a reward following hard work pushed her to work more aggressively in the organization. In the ordinary sense, individual hope to get up the ladder as they work continually for organization. These promotions however do not come in a vacuum. They tag along qualifications like hard work and responsibility among other positive attributes. This is perhaps the state of mind that the character had while doing all she did while working for the firm. Andre expected that her diligence and the sacrifices she made at the initial stages in the organization as a junior assistant would finally pay off through a promotion to a reporter or a writer for the organizations fashion magazine.

Managerial Actions to Increase Sachs' Levels of Motivation

Considering the personality traits of the character in the workplace and the factors of motivation that associate with her, there exist a number of managerial actions, which evidently can help increase motivation in her. One of the means by which managers can motivate characters like Andre includes exhibiting a sense of trust towards the employees. Andre seems to perform better whenever Miranda showed her some approval and demonstrated that she trusted her. Andre gladly undertook tasks that Miranda gave to her even if they did not associate with office work. Having Miranda sent her to her house and getting to handle the fashion book that Miranda used for the new fashion accessories illustrated an increase in trust on the part of Miranda who in exchange gained loyalty in the eyes of her junior personal assistant. Increasing learning opportunities and presenting more obligations to these individuals would also serve as a factor for increasing motivation in them. Andre is increasingly excited whenever she gets to do new and challenging tasks for the organization, for such an individual, this indicates a show of trust in their capacity to handle tasks that are more complex and may be an opportunity for promotions and recognition of their efforts.

Increasing motivation for a character like Andre would also take the form of rewards, whether in the form of gifts or expression of appreciation for good work done. Complimenting individuals for their exceptional performance and rewarding them directly goes a long way in enhancing their performance. The trip to Paris, though acts against Emily's favour was a form of reward that helped increase Andres' Loyalty towards Miranda. Such loyalties constitute the triggers for great performance in the work place for such kinds of employees. Though not seemingly conventional, the use of calculus-based trust is a major weapon for enhancing trust, increasing loyalty and facilitating better performance for workers like Andre. Miranda occasionally used this approach in ensuring Andre stayed by her side and performs as per her demands. In many instances, she threatened the character with a sack in case she would fail to follow her instruction and this practically worker for Miranda. Andre, out of some fear of disapproval also tried to please Miranda by following her instructions to the latter. This included doing chores that were sometimes, not directly related to her job description.

Managerial Actions to Decrease Sachs' Levels of Motivation

As seen with this character, lack of motivation and the absence of rewards seem to decrease the motivation levels of such characters. Andres determination, though extreme had its own limits. After knowing, the real perception that Miranda had towards her, Andre throws in the towel, quitting the company and kissing her job and ambition goodbye. Andre believes that Miranda approved of her conducts and attitudes all along and this helped push her to perform even better within the organization. Realizing that Miranda considered her as an object and appreciated not all; her efforts discouraged her leading her to quit her job eventually. The long wait for a reward that in due course never came also decreased the characters motivation as it would in the case of many organizational employees. Although the character worked so hard and sacrificed much with the hope of venturing into her journalism career with the firm, this reality never came in the end. Miranda's comments about her towards the end of the film suggested disapproval meaning she was most unlikely to hire her for the position she had so much wanted and worked hard to attain. She is obviously disappointed at Miranda who, in a sense, took advantage of her vulnerable situation, for her own selfish ends. Because of this lack of motivation, Andre quits her job and leaves the fashion house for good.

Providing a friendly environment for such a worker would, as oppose to ordinary beliefs not motivate a character like Andre. Instead of boosting her ability to work, such an environment would create a sense of false satisfaction for such employees and make them reluctant to prove their capability within the organization. With nothing to challenge them in the organizational environment, workers like Andrea would enjoy the experience of the comfort zone and make no effort in changing their situation and organizational positions or improving on their performance and therefore, the company's productivity. Challenges and difficulties, at the organization triggered the characters passion to perform better and attain the standards of a reporter or writer as she expected to achieve. Without such harsh treatment and environment, Andre would have experienced limited changes in the organization say in the aspect of gaining appropriate sense of fashion and learning various skills.

On motivation, I initially believed that it took only the positive factors on the part of managers and organization to motivate workers. All employees seemed to posses the same personality traits and thus the same need for motivation. Factors like creating a positive attitude, establishing an enabling and less complex work environment and eliminating complexities and difficulties, I considered as the main elements for motivation all the classes of workers within organizations. After reviewing this character with respect to her personality, motivation and the management of staff, I realize that motivating workers in organization takes multiple angles. The fact that different individuals in organizations have different personality traits and diverse needs for motivation is obvious. In as much as some individuals derive motivation from having organizations and management offer friendly and enabling environment, other prefer deriving motivation from considerably challenging settings. The case of Andre Sachs demonstrate clearly the truth that some employees get motivated to work better in situations where they experience condition that others would ordinarily consider as undesirable. In such challenging environment worker can develop mechanisms for adjusting to the situation, exhibit behaviours that attempt to prove the environment wrong and get past the challenges they experience. The fact that the character in the film remains determined to perform well amidst challenges of humiliation, undesirable conditions and gossip among other negative features demonstrates this aspect.

As presented in this report, motivation in the workplace is a necessary element, which takes different shapes depending on a variety of factors. One such factor includes that of personality as in the case of Andrea, a character who exhibits Affective personality in the workplace. The personality traits which associates with the ability to survive undesirable conditions in the work place and derive motivation from difficulties in the same environment introduces a new angle to motivation in the working place. With respect to the personality of the character and the factors of motivations in line with hers personality, different actions on the part of the mangers' have the capacity of either increasing or reducing their levels of motivation. Additionally, this discussion has changed my perception on workplace motivation which initially was simply one sided. [END OF PREVIEW]
