SAMPLE EXCERPT . . .
Such was the state of affairs in much of Eastern Europe not much more than a decade ago. The Czech Republic is a shining example of a country whose rich culture, and ebullient lifestyle were kept under wraps by a communist government. No sooner had the strictures of the old Soviet Era been lifted, than the old Czech nature reemerged. Prague again became the "Paris of the East." The theory then is, that by keeping up the pressure on Castro's Cuba, the Cuban people will eventually feel just as deprived as the Czechs, and like the Czechs, they will eventually rebel.

It is just this dogged aversion to any substantive change in the embargo that Americans believe will bring about the democratization of Cuba, and the fall of Fidel Castro. Even though many are actually natives of the Island themselves, the vast majority of Cuban-Americans support the American government's rigid sanctions against their homeland. And though they still have family and friends in Cuba, people who live every day under conditions that they themselves fled, they still believe strongly in the necessity of maintaining those conditions in order to bring down Castro. Recent attempts at some sort of reconciliation by the Bush administration, at least in so far as reducing some of its exceptions, have met with anger from many Cuban-Americans. "Bush's apparent decision to alter these demands sparked a wave of bitter despair among Miami- and Washington-based proponents of the embargo."Buy full Download Microsoft Word File paper

Term Paper on Policy Should the United States Assignment

Thus, proponents of the continued American embargo against Cuba hold out the hope that continued pressure on the Cuban government will eventually cause such distress and discontentment throughout the country, that Cubans will rise in a body against the regime, and overthrow Fidel Castro. Cuban-Americans ache over their brothers' plight, but on the whole, firmly believe that sanctions are the only way forward. The American way of life is superior to the Cuban as it brings with it material luxuries and personal freedoms that simply do not exist under a communist system. On the other hand, physical comfort, and modern technological gadgets are not everything. Not every civilization values the material over the spiritual. Does the camaraderie and corporatism of Marxism and Castroism outweigh the many liberties of democracy? That is for the Cuban people to decide. Furthermore, opponents of the embargo, and by way of example, this would include most of the nations in the world, observe that forty years of unrelenting antagonism toward Cuba and its government has not brought about the changes that the United States seeks. Say opponents, embargo is a dead end.
