What is Primus Epic® Integrated Avionics System?

There are standard avionics systems that are independent components and which are assembled to work as a whole in an aircraft. There will be different demands by different types of aircraft and systems like navigation, flight plan and landing accessories and data and flight analysis are all incorporated using supplies from specialized manufacturers and integrated for individual aircrafts. This often brings about component suitability and portability issues. The answer is to create a system that incorporates all the required features into one compact system that can deliver all requirements using one set of hardware, data and software. This requirement is fulfilled by the Primus Epic. Primus Epic is an integrated avionics system that was created by Honeywell, and it was certified in 2003 when used with the Bell/Augusta AB139. Primus Epic AW139 Four is a revolutionary breakthrough in display technology for helicopters also. It is the world's first interactive navigation system. Objects on the display can be selected by the pilot to enhance display or gather other information. The system is completely driven by software and the system updates and data functionality can be maintained and there is no learning curve involved. Honeywell has developed an integrated primary flight display --IPFD that can project the external environment into the screen for decision making. The Primus Epic not only provides better view but enhances the deck functionality, and using modular avionics and flat panel displays. It also has a fully functional helicopter FMS. Other features include a four-axis autopilot, display of engine instruments, crew alerting, flight planning and a weather radar. (Honeywell Business Aviation, 2010)

In other words the system incorporates a number of systems that were hitherto integrated with different parameters and manufacturers that caused issues in compatibility. Now this single system performs a host of functions that would have other wise required a number of instruments and services. From the flight plan to the execution of the flight the Honeywell system takes care of a number of flight related activities in a single unit. That is the innovation of the system. It was tested for winged flights and also for rotor flights. Thus it integrates many services into one and makes all the services available in a single console.

2. How the system works?

The system is an integrated chip managed solution that is based on both the physical situation that can be viewed- including the flight and external situation as is obtained by using cameras and displays -which can help the pilot look at the underbelly, and inside and better integration of flight data processing using computer technology. The greater part is the fact that it has a technology is a blend of two existing methods that can enhance pilot vision. One is the synthetic vision systems -- SVS and two the enhanced vision systems -- EVS. The synthetic vision uses a computer and data base that helps the plane in finding its position by using the terrain database and in night and clouds the pilot can see electronically what ought to be there. The fact remains true that this is not the current world view and the reality - caused by changes may be quite different from the view given by the data analysis in the synthetic mode. In the Honeywell's synthetic vision, called SmartView, along with the data processed it also provides the altitude, HSI, and all instrument data. Other things include the vertical speed, altimeter velocity vector, navigation source, annunciators display and airspeed tape presentations. There are also autopilot annunciations, trend vectors and more. The pilot gets a general view of the land below including all possible hazards and view of essentials that cannot be viewed except on a computer screen. (Goyer, 2010) Thus the system works on existing data stored and accessed and also on new inputs from the current world.

3. What are the subsystems in Primus Epic?

There are many features that are unique to the system and are found first time in the world of avionics. For example, Honeywell's AW139 has an external camera to verify engine fire warnings and also see the undercarriage. The system has a LCD 'scratch pad' that the pilot can use to bring up any information required like weather radar, map and flight plan. Safety features can be noted with the trim actuators, and the 'Attitude Heading Reference System -- AHRS' and these can be used just as easily by any pilot using fixed wing or rotor wing crafts. There is other sub-features that do not need elaboration like the 'Integrated Primary Flight Display -- IPFD' are used with business jets. It has an 'Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System -- EGPWS' database that can show the pilots the flight path, terrain, and added to that the Honeywell's navigation provide for flight-planning. It is a strategic tool allowing the pilot to plan far in advance of events in the flight plan. The integrated HUD symbology shows the optimum energy management paradigm for the airplane and thus combines a lot of information and decision making tools. (Honeywell Business Aviation, 2010)

Flight Controls include the "Axis AFCS (Standard) SAS, Dual AHRs, Flight Management, Safety Systems and subsystems include the equipment diagnostics, crew intercom, Exceedence Recording, Integrated Maintenance, trend monitoring communications and Lightning Sensor." (Honeywell Business Aviation, 2010) Other communications facilities are VHF Communication and HF Communication. (Honeywell Business Aviation, 2010) the features are demonstrated to suit not only aircrafts of the winged kind and commercial jets, but also very effective and useful in helicopters where flights have taken a new aspect. These features are made available for helicopters too and have been tried out with the AgustaWestland AW139.

4. What are the system benefits?

In the helicopter, tests of the system were carried out earlier at the time of innovation. A check by the magazine 'Flight International' in evaluation of the Honeywell advanced avionics and flight-control systems for the AgustaWestland AW139 shows how the company has changed the way avionics is approached. In the Primus Epic package, the technology for jets and planes is updated and adjusted to suit the helicopter and also to provide exactly all the features available to the jets - like automatic landing and take off process, and specially for helicopters - a safe SAR at night in bad weather over hostile terrain. The honey well system has the Flight Path Marker-based PFD-HUD symbology, conformal terrain that shows the flight path and the Flight Path Marker, and incorporates a color coded terrain like a map. It can help distinguish water from the sky and packs other systems like the EGPWS, range rings to show distance and possible obstacles, and the runway markers and the help to steady the flight. It has the best feature in the form of advanced synthetic vision. (Honeywell Aerospace, 2010) These systems have been so integrated and effectively presented for all aircrafts by Honeywell and is well received by aviation experts and pilots. Their pilots enjoy hands off system for most of the flight.

5. How the system can be used in helicopters? All of the systems have been tried and used in helicopters

Robert Goyer shows in test trials that the system on a Cessna was efficient with the Prescott Honeywell primary flight display and also the same tried out in other jets like the Sovereign. (Goyer, 2010) it has been successfully used in helicopters. The Augusta Wetland Helicopters - the AW139 was meant for the medium market and the machine was designed with powerful engines, better rotors, and Honeywell Primus avionics suit. The Honeywell services were able to integrate the standard primus epic into the helicopter where it provided more services than mere navigation and communications. For the helicopter the system is designed to be a single box that saves space - the modular radio cabinet. The helicopter shares features with many other aircraft that is fitted with the system and hence the unique configuration for the helicopter was possible. Other than the navigation the access to all systems and even baggage space is essential in a military flight and this is arranged for in this system.
