[. . .] Secondly, the GED is not as effective as expected due to the course outline of the subjects. The GED only provides the inmates with a certificate equivalent of the high school certificate (Kaprov & Kaprov, 2009). This means that for the person to obtain gainful employment, they have to further their education. This is an enormous challenge as most of the convicted persons in the first place went into crime due to the inability to access education facilities. Therefore, this means that when released, the person goes to the same poverty-stricken home, and does not have means to further their studies. Thus, the program does not achieve the objective of reducing recidivism (Sullivan, 2009). Lastly, the GED program service cannot produce equipped persons due to the rising population of the inmates. This population means that the available facilitators do not achieve the indicated goal of study since the populations is too high in the classes. However, on the positive side, for persons with the ability, once they get the GED certificate, they have the ability to pursue higher vocational training, equipping themselves with qualities and skills to enable them survive in the outside society (Kim, Losen & Hewitt, 2010).


The GED program can produce some desirable result in the society, helping the inmates with the drive to change to better persons once released into the society.

Research design

To assess the effectiveness of the GED program, the proposed research should consider the places of gathering the desired information. The data for the research will be from selected prison facilities in the United States of America. Additionally, the data will also come from selected areas with high crime prevalence as selected by the researcher, targeting the persons released from prisons and their families and relatives and the community. The independent variables of the research process include the correctional facilities selected and the areas in the community selected. The dependent variables of the study include the inmates, the GED program variables and the facilitators of the GED programs.

To establish the facts of the proposed research, various data collection becomes will come in handy. These methods of collecting information on the subject include the use of interviews. Various interviews with the receded inmates, facilitators of GED programs, the families of inmates who receded and the prison wardens will provide first hand information. Additionally, the use of questionnaires with open and closed ended questions will provide sufficient information. Moreover, the research can apply the use of observation to acquire the data of the general feeling of the program's effectiveness. The researcher will attend the programs sessions to observe the delivery modes and other factors that are useful in determining the effectiveness of the program. These three methods of collecting data will allow the research to assess the topic of research thoroughly and attain conclusive data and information.

Data analysis

The data analysis stage will evaluate the data collected to establish the findings of the research. The data analysis will be both quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative analysis mechanisms will include analysis of the statistical data such as the percentage of the persons who pass through the GED program in prison and amongst those, those who recede. These are some of the statistical calculations on the data analysis stage. On the qualitative data analysis, the data will evaluate the corresponding answers from the interviews and the questionnaires to make conclusive reports of the findings. The data will also undergo discussion by the researching team to establish its authenticity and correctness. These are the data analysis procedures for the proposed research.

Implications of proposed research

The proposed research into the effectiveness of the current program will help determine the positive impacts it has on the inmates. It will also provide the opportunity for the developers of the program curriculum to upgrade the program. Upgrading this GED program will integrate the proposals from the findings of this research that will enhance the effectiveness of the GED program in reducing recidivism. The research is significant, as it will indicate the current impacts of the prison education program on the objective of the correctional facilities, which is to produce reformed ex-offenders into the society.


The criminal justice system is initiating various programs to reduce the cases of recidivism of the ex-offenders. The GED program is a significant initiative towards the emancipation of the convicted persons. The justice system should continue implementing the program and further combine it with the vocational training program to equip the convicts for the outside society (Gideon & Sung, 2011). Moreover, the society is adopting measures to equip the ex-offenders and support them to integrate into the society. The society should support such initiatives to help in reducing the prevalent cases of recidivism.
