The second part of managing sports tourism occurs at the destination itself. Sports tourists want something new. They want to get off of the beaten path and make their way into the wilderness. But, they want to do this safely and productively. Managing the destination requires making sure that the customers keep going, but also that the officials in charge of a site are kept happy also.

Countries so not have the developed infrastructure most tourists require is not an issue for many sports tourists. Actually the opposite is true. And the benefit does not occur in one direction. The people of the country can benefit extremely from the wealthy tourist who wants to see an exotic destination and experience its features. Many see "the role that sport has played in facilitating and bolstering social and economic development in many regions of the world, especially those categorized as low-income countries (Levermore), and they want to continue that. Quality management in sports tourism requires understanding the needs of the country and the ability to work with local governments to promote the site effectively. Giving the customer what they want in this regard can actually be easier than booking trips was in the past. Easier because these tourists are not concerned with "creature" comforts. Research Paper on Quality Management in Sports Tourism Assignment

Even traditional sites that have been used for a certain type of tourism are broadening their perspective to incorporate sports tourism. Many areas in Israel are popular for their archeological value. People would visit these sites because they were either on a quest to visit a holy shrine or because they wanted to see edifices erected thousands of years ago (Uriely, Schwartz, Cohen & Reichel). However, many of these areas have been open to sports tourists now as a new way of generating capital and interest. Although. "most trails are minimally developed" and they can be somewhat dangerous (Uriely, Schwartz, Cohen & Reichel), tourism has drastically increased in the region and brought a level of prosperity to its people not seen before.

Tourists are also flocking to Malaysia as never before because of the sports tourism benefits that the country offers. At one state venue, "[t]ourists visiting Tasik Kenyir can experience many services such as boating, jungle trekking, fishing, swimming, kayaking and many other sports and ecology-based tourism (Zakaria, Hamid, Karim & Daud). The eco-tourism that the country offers has created profitable partnerships between the government and tourism providers.

Besides the more exotic tourist locales, people also seek opportunities to participate or watch their favorite sports. The Olympics is now a worldwide phenomenon, but such events as the Tour de France, the World Cup, and others have seen an increase in the number of foreign tourists who visit a country. The impact of hosting a major sporting event can have major financial ramifications for many years to after the sports teams have left. People are still drawn to Olympic resorts, such as those in Lillehammer, Norway (Welford & Ytterhaus), and want to personally experience the thrill of victory. Sports facilities and events are now being used by a considerable number of tour operators, accommodation providers and destinations to 'add value' to their tourism offering (Devine & Devine).


Quality management in sports tourism encompasses several aspects of the industry, but it is a growing and profitable business stream. Even when other types of tourism are seeing declines, sports tourism remains popular. The individuals who either participate in or watch the events are from a wealthy enough demographic that they have not been as affected by the global financial slowdown. They still want to travel, and the management of the travel employees, destinations and travelers is crucial to the success of a venture. Quality management means that satisfaction in all areas is of utmost importance. This is simple to accomplish when benefits such as increased revenue for the destination, increased health for the participant and increased satisfaction for everyone involved is realized.
