Personal Meditation Reflection:

Meditation is an important psychological practice that protects the brain against aging as well as enhancing an individual's ability to learn new things. This practice achieves this through sharpening focus, lessening stress, lowering blood pressure, and relieving chronic pain. Generally, it helps a person to experience greater calm, connect with deepest feelings, and challenges tendencies of self-judgment. Consequently, meditation leads to open doors for actual and accessible happiness for an individual. According to Salzberg (2011), meditation is basically training an individual's attention in order to become more aware of inner workings and external incidents (p.7). After becoming more aware of inner workings and external incidents, a person can choose his/her actions towards things that are visible. While each global religion incorporates some kind of thoughtful exercise, meditation in today's world is usually practiced separately from any belief system.

Sharon Salzberg provides different kinds of meditation in her book on real happiness in order to help people transform their lives through this practice. Some of the various kinds of meditation in her book include concentration, mindfulness and the body, mindfulness and emotions, and cultivating compassion and true happiness. One of these meditations that I pursued as outlined in Salzberg's 28-day program is concentration through breathing and the art of starting over. The main elements of this kind of meditation include breathing, hearing, and letting go of thoughts. However, it requires the selection of an appropriate time, place, and posture before commencing with the meditation process. In essence, the quality and effectiveness of the meditation is dependent on the choice of place and time as well as having the appropriate posture.

Concentration through breathing and the art of starting over has helped me a lot in the past two weeks when I was facing a challenging situation at school. Before engaging in the meditation process, I have always had a tendency of blaming everyone except myself when encountering a challenging situation. I was asked to do certain calculations that seemed very difficult to understand and do despite trying to comprehend the formula several times. I felt very frustrated and weak in that moment and did not have or maintain full composure. Since my classmates seemed to do the calculations with relative ease, I started blaming everyone except myself. When I got home, I decided to meditate and reflect on the seemingly difficult mathematical problem in order to perform the calculations.

Thoughts, Emotions, and Sensory Experiences during Meditation Sittings:

I conducted my meditation at night when everybody else was asleep and in my bedroom while seated on my couch. This is usually my favorite place, time, and posture where I get to reflect on the day's experiences. During the meditation, I reflected on every aspect or element of the problem starting with breathing in order to clear mind. As a result, my body felt less tense and started to understand the complex problem for what it really was. The meditation and reflection session also helped me to examine the situation with openness and from a positive perspective.

Generally, there are various objects that are used to focus an individual's attention including emphasis on sensations of emotions, thoughts, or breathing or looking at different types of body sensations (Bhanoo, 2011). I used these different forms of focusing one's attention in order to recollect my mind rather than letting it drift to other things. Consequently, my meditation incorporated two major ingredients i.e. alertness and openness and receptivity. Alertness basically involved having the right posture at the appropriate time and place and recollecting my mind to ensure it does not drift to other things. The sense of openness and receptivity was brought by relaxing, looking at the problem positively, and lessening body tension or anxiety (Brach, n.d.).

One of the benefits of the meditation is that it contributed to the cultivation of positive perceptions and thoughts that eventually helped me to solve the problem. I started to develop a positive attitude that the problem can be solved and to tap into my ability to understand and do the calculations. This was characterized with feelings of less tension in the body as I felt more relaxed and focused on the problem. The relaxation and focus in turn enabled me to create solutions to the issue, which made me feel excited and realize my capability to handle such complex issues.

Following the Program:

Even though I was initially skeptical about the meditation program, it was relatively easy for me to follow it. Actually, I have added the meditation program into my personal reflection program because of its significance and impact in transforming the quality of life by learning new things and tapping into my full potential. Since then, I have continued using the meditation program to reflect on various complex issues. The results of the meditation have exceeded my expectations mainly because of the significant problems I have been able to solve. Meditation has been an important part of my life since it enables me to enhance my day.

The meditation program i.e. 4-week regimen was not difficult or challenging for me to follow because it enabled me to have meaningful insights regarding myself and my consciousness processes. I exercised my consciousness processes at various degrees of significance and depth to not only solve problems but learn new things. I found the meditation experience quite calming, self-expanding, transpersonal, and rejuvenating. The 4-week regimen was not only profound but also enabled me to be quiet, conduct self-observation, and experience stillness (Johnson, 2009, p.138). The experience helped me to listen more patiently and negotiate complex problems in a better way.

Different Meditations:

I adopted the 4-week regimen after experiencing tremendous results in my initial experience with it. However, I realized that some meditations are easier or difficult than other processes or programs. While I adopted easy, simple and natural styles of meditation, some meditations were generally harder or easier to do than others. The difficulties in the harder meditations were attributed to a variety of factors such as problems with thoughts, restlessness, uncomfortable feelings, and disappointment that the processes were not always characterized with good experiences.

Problems with thoughts during the process were brought by seeming inability to quiet them mind and prevent it from drifting in some cases. Restlessness was characterized with the fact that I sometimes found it hard to sit still and be quiet and was confronted with feelings of wanting to get up and do other things (Maddux & Maddux, n.d.). Uncomfortable feelings included strong emotions or physical sensations in the body due to usual daily distractions. The lack of good experience in every meditation was because each is different and characterized with physical and emotional changes and changing life situations.

Differences in Reactions:

Meditation has essentially had a tremendous impact in my daily life by changing my reactions and responses to life's situations. First, this process and program has made me to undergo profound and fine changes in my thinking processes and consciousness i.e. how I view myself in today's world. Unlike before, I have learnt how to look at my capability to handle issues in life and how to look at challenges and problems differently. In essence, meditations have made me realize that I don't need to limit who I think I am or what I am capable of doing or achieving (Salzberg, 2011, p.5). Secondly, the meditation has enabled to develop a positive mental attitude though which I can confidently face various situations. Third, meditations have been transformational in developing my creative thinking ability.
