¶ … Relationship of Research and Experience Concerning Curricular Change

Regarding the process of changing the existing curriculum there is certainly the requirement for first studying the existing system. This can vary for the entire education process in different subjects and levels. It is simpler if we study at a low enough level so that every individual can understand the requirements for changing the curriculum. This may involve not only changing the subjects of study and the hours to be devoted to each subject, but also in changing the entire process of education. To conduct the entire process it is essential that enough persons connected with teaching of the subject at the levels that are being considered are interviewed. After all the objectives is to get better students at the end of the course. It is also important to know the expectations and difficulties of the students as that will help us to rectify the systems that they have to go through. The required change will necessarily be carried out by the individual in charge of the concerned institution providing the teaching to the students. One has tried to take up simple examples here so that the matter remains intelligible to all. At the same time, it has been done over a number of institutions so that certain general difficulties can be noticed. The levels concerned are also deliberately kept low enough so that every person can understand the changes that are being carried out. (Access and Widening Participation)

The first part of change that any student faces in an institution is the process of admissions and this was changed recently in a renowned college so that the lines of communication could be clear with the student from the beginning. This was done by the college based on a study of the students who were admitted into the course during the month of September 2001, and there they found the interview process to be friendly and useful. The tutor in charge of admissions found that this process was initially looked at by the students as being a situation where they became nervous, and the process itself took up a lot of time. This made a lot of the persons in charge of taking decisions about admissions wonder about the introduction of interviews in the system of admissions. Yet, after it was tried on a trial basis the staff members found this to be useful and volunteered to do the interviews as they felt that this had improved the quality of students who are admitted into the course.

The process of interviews permits the lecturers to make informed decisions about the incoming students and this is important for students who may not have qualifications that would normally viewed as excellent qualifications for admission when one looks at his qualifications in a straightforward manner. This has made the college ask the students make a lot of personal statements on the application forms and during the interviews. The process of interviews permits the department to make a correct evaluation of the commitment of the student to the course. According to the admissions tutor 'I take a lot from the interview. A standard interview question is about their reading, and you can tell fairly quickly by their use of vocabulary whether or not they are engaged in the subject.' (Access and Widening Participation)

The process of interviews gives the students a chance to ask questions about the process of admissions and details of the course that they will have to go through. This is important for getting the full commitment of the students. Some of the students are not applying through the general process of admissions but contact the Manchester Metropolitan University directly about the chance of being admitted, and it is possible for these students to contact the admissions tutor directly. Generally these students are looking at details of the application procedure, duration of the course and the total contents of the course. This information is not passed on to them in the normal process and the new system is able to pass on the concerned information in a simple manner. The information sought for is the procedures of application and the content of the course. The questionnaire that the students are asked to reply to has already shown that the initial interview and the flexible nature of the course are important for the applicant students who want to join. (Access and Widening Participation) similar situation is also seen in the Teesside department which is looking at national, institutional and regional recruiting possibilities to get students for their courses. The admissions tutor there explained that they are looking for students who have been defined as gifted and talented even at school so that the college can give them special attention. For the convenience of the students, the classes for the Masters course has been turned into an evening class as this helps many different schools can then join up. The most important issue for the students is confidences and they need a lot of support for going through the course. In some respects they are similar to the situation that they face to Manchester Metropolitan University, and they can also make no assumption about the prior skills that the students have.

The reason for this is that a lot of the students come from families who are going to the University for a Degree. Thus it is not possible to make assumption regarding the knowledge about the degree or how it is going to help them. There was also the team of teachers at King Alfred's, and they had tried to adapt to the changes required by the students by adopting a change in the curriculum and the new curriculum is focused on the signposting skills of the students to methods within the structure of the text-focused models. (Access and Widening Participation) Thus it can be clearly seen that the objective of the changes that are carried out in colleges are to meet the requirements of the students and that is also true for changes in the curriculum.

Of course, the changes in curriculum have to be decided by experts on the subject, and there are many subjects and different experts on each subject. The students have different levels of contact regarding education after they leave school and before they join college. Some of the students had taken up informal courses before getting on to the Access course in a college, and they had reasons like a son being born, their own personal satisfaction by going through certain courses, and then getting into College for courses which they could do. This could be the limitation of a course requiring them to come once a week, or not having the best of school education. This sort of courses also permitted some students to attend college when they had no previous family history of getting into college. Other students have the problem of funds before attending college, and they had to look for saving a high amount of money or getting a loan from the bank. Whenever we think about changes in the curriculum these are important aspects for the students and they have to be kept in mind. This aspect has also been looked at by the Association of University Administration and was highlighted during a conference which was named as "Recruitment and Retention: the Institutional Approach." One of the main presentations at this conference was a provost who was with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He shared with the audience his experience with an institution that had a highly centralized system of recruitment and admissions. Of course the end result was a brilliantly managed institution with a high record of success in achieving the objectives that it was set up for. This was the first such conference in a series that was the result of a tie up between the British authorities and their American counterparts. The higher education system in United States is very large and nobody can make general statements about it, yet it has certain factors that have made it extremely popular even among the British educational authorities, and that includes the politicians with Great Britain. The reason for the popularity of the system is that in general it is viewed to be more dependent on merit. The main method of selection of students for college in United States is the Scholastic Aptitude Test. This is a big effort and requires a lot of support from the universities in America.

At the same time, this test has the advantage of selecting students from the disadvantaged sections of the society as also the racial groups. Britain also has such groups within the country and often enough they do not have the required contacts to get into University.
