This is a delicate business dilemma. The major good being resolved was the need to raise enough blood for the coming summer. The initiative made Mary as the director of the blood bank fund to seek help from well-wishers. Good to her expectations, she was lucky to find a private corporation to help on the realization of the cause's objectives. However, the predicament arises when one of the senior directors at the company sexually molests one of Mary's nurses. This brings about an ethical dilemma for Mary and her team. The dilemma is whether to take legal steps against the rogue official, lose the goodwill, and help of the company or let the crime fizzle away for the sake of the greater good of its support on the initiative. The benefits would extend to saving many lives during the coming summer. This ethical dilemma shall be tackled in the following eight-step process (Trevino, & Nelson, 2010).

As the lead manager in the medical facility and the major decision maker in the organization, Mary must establish the facts about this case. Possibly, there would have been some fabrication of the truth hence the need to have a factual basis before thinking of the next step. In this case, Mary needs to calm the situation first to allow room for the presentation of facts and make sober judgments. Both sides of the case should be given some fair hearing. Reasonably, this will prevent unfair judgments being made. Chapter on Resolving Ethical Dilemmas in the Workplace Assignment

The second step relates to defining the ethical issues that the company holds. The manager will premise her decision on the ethical principles when adressing the pending issue (Trevino, & Nelson, 2010). This ought to have been made known to all then company employees and stakeholders beforehand. For instance, at the point of employment, the employees must be made aware of the ethical practices of the company. This prepares them to be aware of what is expected from them at the workplace psychologically. For instance, one such ethical practice is on the sexual harassment touching on staff. The work of the medical director in solving this case will be made easier with the use of the previously set ethical guidelines.

Thirdly, Mary will have to identify the affected parties in this case. Doing so will enable the director to conclude decisively on how to handle each. For instance, if the harassed medical staff feels dejected from the decision taken by the director, she might not wish to continue working with the organization anymore. Similarly, in case the manager accused of the sexual offense feels that he has been mistreated, he will choose to abandon the aid he was offering to the blood company. It is upon the Mary to decide who of the two is worth sacrificing for the common good of the company (Knapp & VandeCreek, 2012).

Step number five is to identify the obligations involved. Obligations here involve what the management of the organization ought to do in order to be right with its clients. The decision maker in this case has to consider her character and integrity before making the decision. It will help her to consider what step to take. This has to be followed by contemplating and thinking creatively about the decisions to take. In this case, the decisions needed are those that will bring the least collateral damage. Mary should listen to Peggy and seek her suggestion top the problem whether she would forgive her assailant or not. She should also ensure that Joe confesses the truth according the way he saw the event. Most importantly will be how to deal with the donor who in this case appears as a savior to the clinic in terms of the blood collection objective. Finally, the decision-maker also has to assess her guts on this; whether to allow her emotions inform her actions or not (Trevino, & Nelson, 2010).

The existence of ethical principles within the company is essential in protecting employees from possible harm as they carry out their duties. As seen in the sexual harassment case, succinct rules empowers the employee to report to Mary as the general manager even when she clearly knows that their company might lose the essential support in their quest to collect blood.


In life, some situations require our attention and especially when answering the call of public obligation. These situations are necessary to bring about the best for the community and perhaps make life of the members of the society comfortable. This can be through recognized official duties and naturally answering the natural call be ensuring that whatever requires the attention of the members of the public ought to be attended to regardless of the inconvenience of personal discomfort. However, people normally find it hard to serve the public and abandon self-development interests. In this case, the victim of this dilemma had to weigh between helping the family members trapped in the fire or the many other people who were trapped in the fire. In this case, it was hard saving both since the time that was available could only have been sufficient to attend to one of the two categories. This perfect case can be used to demonstrate the life dilemmas that normally affect people when personal interests are at stake (Knapp & VandeCreek, 2012).

In this case, the first hearing of voices from the two ends of the burning house will jolt me into action to attempt to save them. The choice will now be on which side of the two voices to respond. The fact that many voices come from one side while only one voice come from the other side means that some rationality will inform my action. I will respond to the many cries coming from one of the ends of the burning house. I will be forced to ignore the sole voice coming from the other end. The reason for doing this is to that will more loss if in respond to the single voice and leave the many others burning. In this case, the need to have maximum good attained, there will be a necessity to save the many and leave the one as an unavoidable sacrifice. Often at times in life, such situations occur where one has to use a rational judgment to deal successfully with such unique cases. The guiding principle will always be to pursue an avenue that will lead to the greatest benefit (Trevino, & Nelson, 2010).

After hearing the voices from my close family members, my preferred location for the corner of the house will change. I will be forced to honor the family ties and blood relation naturally and respond rescue my family member first. I will in turn take a detour and change my mind by going to the sole voice first. All this happens with the full knowledge in my mind that I am going to lose many other more lives burning at the other end. Despite this knowledge, the blood ties with a family member are always what will make one to go against the natural obligation of answering the public call. This is similar to the situation that arises when one finds himself/herself in a dilemma regarding employment (Knapp & VandeCreek, 2012).

A manager will more likely approve the employment of someone from the interview who has more blood ties with him or her. This may occur despite the possible harm it might have on the company's image. The scenario created by this case of a burning house is a perfect case of family outshining public good. The case presented here needed a consideration of not just ethics but a balance of facts. One reality is that if I successfully manage to save many people, I will have achieved the greater good. However, instead of feeling good for this great achievement, I will instead be overcome by the grief of losing my close relative. I might not forgive myself for having had to lose a relative when I had a perfect chance of saving him. This is the reason as to why I will not feel more moved to act on the need for the public good and lose the one I treasure most (Trevino, & Nelson, 2010).

The difference in the two decisions in based on interest. In the first case, I had made the decision to go save the many people locked up at one corner of the house. Later, I had to change my mind on learning that the sole voice was that of my relative. This is just understandable given the fact that I am obliged to save the people I love.
