SAMPLE EXCERPT:

[. . .] The patient should see the manager always there for him no matter the extent of the terminal illness.

A step by step Postvention plan for case manager to help family and friends deal with the loss of a loved one due to the loved one committed suicide because of a terminal illness diagnosis

i. Talk about the illness

The family and friends should understand the illness before talking about what the person has done. Talk about the consequences of the illness. Talk about the pain and displeasure. Talk about the hard fillings and the disillusionment the patient was going through. Talk about its consequences and the stressing feelings that come with it. The family and friends should be in the shoes of the patient before he or she committed suicide. Talk about many other people who have suffered the same illness and never made it in life. Explore on the goodness that was done even though the illness was terminal and the patient could not be protected from whatever he or she did. Talk about what else can be done to protect the lives of those living with the same situation. Talking about such things will ease the pain felt by the family and friends to the departed.

ii. Talk about the person

Talk about the departed person. In most cases, every positive thing about the departed should be shared among the family and friends. Talk about the good attributes. Talk about how he or she struggled and contained the challenges of the illness. Talk about his or her talents, strengths, and even weaknesses (Weems & in Tautges, 2012). Appreciate the many good things that the departed accomplished in life. Talk about everything that was good about the departed, including friends. The family and friends should know the history of the departed. They should appreciate the many things that the departed tried to accomplish in life. Moreover, talk about what the departed stood for in life and how this can be achieved even in his or her absence.

iii. Accept the occurrence

Living in denial cannot stay for any long for the family and friends. Initially, the family and friends understood the situation. The demise of the patient should be accepted after some time. The patient cannot be seen physically. He or she is gone and this is now a reality. The departed cannot come back to live by any means humanly possible. The departed has gone and will never be there to be heard talking again. The family and friends should be told such. The departed has left them for good. Accepting this will create a feeling of appreciation and believe that everything is possible in life.

iv. Serve the death with a burial

The final thing that needs to be done is to observe the rightful sending-off of the departed. In many cases, people have different cultural practices that are done to honor the dead. Such things will have to be done by the family and friends. The wishes of the departed should be observed. Services should be done in honor of the departed (Lynn et al., 2011). Family and friends should appreciate the life of the departed. Every positive thing should be expressed as the departed is being sent off to the grave. Such practices mark the beginning of a new life for the family and friends. The family and friends should know that they are no longer with the person and that they have given everything that will make them happy in life.
