Swimming

During the summer when it is hot hanging out with family or friends in or around the water is a very entertaining and relieving activity. Everyone feels save with just the presence of life-guards around. Yet this may not be a smart idea, as statistics show that between the ages five and twenty four drowning is the second highest cause of accidental death. (Making Water Safety a Splash)

This means that one has to be cautious as one goes splashing, wading and paddling in water to make a hot day enjoyable and this is more so for kids, who do not know how to stay safe in water. Aquatic animals survive in water as they can breathe in water. People cannot breathe in water and drown as too much water enters their lungs. A person dies in drowning because the lungs are unable to provide enough oxygen to the brains and the rest of the body. Drowning can happen so fast, in as short a time as two minutes after a person goes under water, that at many a time it is not possible to provide any kind of assistance to save the person's life. Many a drowning happens accidentally and that is the reason why it is important to know to remain safe around water and these can be easily done by following the simple rules of water safety. Let us start with a few safety tips that could prove useful at home and the possible swimming pool there. Provision of a four-sided fence of four feet height, with self closing and latching facilities, whereby the house and play area are separated from the swimming pool, will prevent children from entering the swimming pool without the supervision of an adult. Locating a telephone that can be seen prominently and displaying the local medical emergency telephone number are a few provisions to help reduce the incidence of drowning at home swimming pools. Now these are the general rules for water safety and though some may be obvious it has to remembered, that any and all of these rules can save a life and so it is advisable to follow them. The use of alcohol and/or drugs and going into water should never be mixed. Keep within the designated swimming area whenever possible. Children should always be under supervision near water. It is advisable to swim parallel to the shore as if not there is the possibility that one may swim too far out into the sea and may not be able to return to the shore as one is too tired. Avoid swimming alone and in an area that one is not sure is safe for swimming. Avoid swimming close to piers or breakwaters as the currents may be too strong irrespective of how good a swimmer one is. Keep away from boats as they require time to make turns and they may not even spot you. (Safety in the Water)

Avoid swimming too far out as open water is normally much colder than the water in a swimming pool. Take note of weather notices and do not venture into water when there are even warnings of thunderstorms and strong winds. Keep out of the water when it is turbulent. Avoid diving into unknown waters and into shallow breaking waves. Ensure that one attempts scuba diving only if the necessary training and certification has been received and it is essential that one remains within the limits of training received. Avoid glass containers at beaches as broken glass can cut bare feet. Avoid beach fires except where they are allowed as the residues of fires and superheated sand can cause severe burns to bare feet. Avoid turning ones back to the seas as there is the possibility of being swept off coastal bluffs or tide pool areas and into the water that could come without any kind of advance notice. Remain within the red and yellow flag markers that indicate the safe swimming areas. (Safety in the Water)

When the danger flags are up refrain form swimming. Avoid swimming when the beach is closed. Ensure that the visual closed for bathing signs and red flag are observed. Avoid panicking in the event one is caught in an undertow or current. Try and raise an arm and float till assistance arrives. In the event of one getting caught in a rip current one should attempt to struggle against it, but rather swim diagonally across it. When affected by cramps in water make no attempts to struggle. Instead an arm should be raised and for assistance and floating should be attempted keeping the affected parts completely still. When the yellow flag is raised indicating that the surf is rough one should refrain from going too far out into the water. Hard heel shoes should be one worn, when one goes walking on the shoreline or wading. Trash on the beaches should be cleared. Use of sunscreens is recommended, as also avoiding sunbathing for too long periods of time. At all times avoid fake actions and calls for assistance.

The advice of lifeguards should be taken seriously as they have received training in beach and water safety. The work of the life guards should not be interfered with and their experience and judgment should be respected. The next area of concern is the swimming pool and these are the safety rules that should be observed especially in the care of young children. Running around the edge of the pool should be prevented as this could cause the children to slip and get hurt or fall in. Avoid dunking and consideration should be shown to other swimmers by avoiding collisions. Use of equipment like snorkels and flippers in the pool should be avoided. Before jumping into a swimming pool one should check to see that there is no one below. Throwing others into the swimming pool should be avoided as also swimming after dark if the lighting is not bright enough. (Safety in the Water)

Swimming pools need to be equipped with floatation equipment and rescue equipment. Pool parties for children that are under the supervision of adults should be avoided. Should a child go missing, check the water areas first, keeping in mind that buckets, wading pools, bathtubs, toilets etc., could pose a danger to toddlers. Some additional general rules that could prove useful to avoid misadventures in the water include remembering that even good swimmers can drown. Just because a child has had swimming lessons it does not mean that the child no longer requires supervision. Keep away from conditions or situations that are a potential risk like swimming in non-public, restricted or isolated areas with strong and turbulent currents. The use of approved flotation devices is a must when traveling in a powered or un-powered water craft and also by anyone who does not know how to swim or are not sure of their swimming capabilities when in water.

Water wings do not provide dependable safety for children in the water and thus do not act as substitution for adult supervision, Reaching and throwing aids should be positioned such that they are readily available. Other points to be kept in mind regarding water safety include the fact that rocks come are formed from lava and hence many rocks can be extremely and could cause one a very unpleasant experience. Similarly pieces of coral in combination with rough waves are not a pleasant experience at all. Hence it is always advisable to familiarize with the rock and coral areas before one attempts to swim in the water, where there is the possibility of their existence.
