[. . .] Sometimes it may be needed to point out the suggestion more directly and ask him about his opinion if a certain section was left out. At the same time the entire exercise cannot be very aggressive as the students may take some time to respond to the questions or prodding. Patience will give the student a feeling that the student has a reply to give, and at the same time too many questions may feel lost out. After all, the conference is for the students. Certain types of questions beginning with what and how are easier on most students than giving answers to "why." This is also true for most writers. (Conferencing with Student Writers)

Another point of interest is the frequency with which the conferences should be held. Ideally this is determined by looking at the group, the jobs hey have to complete, the experience of the instructors, etc. It has however been seen that conferences at the start of courses are more effective than those at the end. At the beginning of the course, the students view the conferences seriously than at the end when they view everything as having been "finished." Generally also the attendance at conferences should be compulsory, as if given an option, the students have a general tendency not to attend such conferences. The conferences may be held both within the class, as also outside depending on the nature of the problem that the conference is scheduled to attend to. These are the best methods for attending to troubles of the students as it is difficult for teachers to even seriously listen to students difficulties about writing. The general tendency for teachers is to start giving instructions while the student wants the teacher to listen to him.

This is also the method used by the students and they subject the teachers to periods of silence to find out whether the teachers are willing to listen to them or not. Many teachers also force the students to write the papers the way the teachers would want them to be written, and not leave it to the individuality of the student. This is wrong as all students have their own independence in terms of writing, and the students really require a guide and a mentor. This attitude when taken by the teachers may also cause conflicts with the students at the beginnings of sessions when the students may feel that the teacher is not teaching them. It is for them to understand that they have to write. Conferences are also for the purpose of teaching and not counseling the students. Conferences are quite tiring, and that is why it is advisable that they are not conducted immediately, one after the other. (Conferencing with Student Writers)

To understand this, one has to first understand certain aspects that have been understood by the scientists. They have just started to understand that the mind has a very high influence on the body, and that this knowledge of the inter-reaction of the body and the mind can be used to judge people and their behavior at different times. The power of the mind is being understood to be more powerful than was ever thought to be earlier. The power of the mind helps in the better performance of athletes, in the combating of illness by individuals, pushing different individuals towards their individual personal success, and in the achieving of goals. This was originally a theory of psychology developed by Carl Jung, a Swiss professor. His theories were taken forward by others to develop an instrument called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI. This instrument is to be used for helping individuals understand and accept themselves. This is also being used to determine the value differences that exist in others, and accept the uniqueness of individuals. (Understanding Clientele Differences)

This is now showing people who accept certain uniqueness in themselves, whereas others are more creative, more productive and generally better equipped to achieve greater success in the world that is changing very rapidly. The MBTI has methods to identify four different types of ways in which people act towards life. In each of these four approaches, there may be two different preferences for dealing with the situation, and each of these methods is equally successful. This behavior is like people being right handed or left handed, it is just a mental attitude which ends up influencing their behavior. The general individual is able to understand his expected contribution this makes them search for other people who do not think the way they do, and this helps them continue on their method of behavior. For trying to understand the behavior of people due to their mental preferences, the individuals are rewarded with appreciation of the viewpoints of others. This stops them from reacting in anger or feeling small when the other person takes a view different from his own view. (Understanding Clientele Differences)

These preferences are called extraversion and introversion, and they give people the energy to deal with others. As an example, one can say that when somebody prefers extroversion then that individual feels energized by being with other people. Others may like being with people and at the same time also requires time for oneself so that the individual may regain energy, then that individual prefers introversion. Extraverts keep talking even as they are thinking out an idea and this even stop them from completely formulating their idea before getting into a discussion. The idea is sometimes finally formed during the talk. The approach of introverts is to think the idea through, consider different alternatives, and then only share their idea with others. These are some ideas that can be put into programs for conferences. Discussions and group interactions will help the extraverts learn. The introverts will on the other hand learn through thinking, concentration and study. The other types are sensing and they like practical and useful experiences. The fourth type is called intuitive and they find a challenge in the possibilities and future orientation.

The individuals who are of a thinking type get their best learning when they explore the systems and the principles. The individuals who are of a feeling type feel the greatest interest in being able to use ideas which can help people. The motivation of the judging types comes from the goals and the deadlines of the conferences. The perceivers would like to have flexible and open ended situations. Thus while designing conferences, we can provide opportunities for every type of individuals, or provide them to team up with others who have the required orientation. The time is progressing and the role of conferences in educating public is being gradually evaluated. This makes it compulsory to combine the strengths of information, skill -building and research into different types through a thorough understanding of individuals. This will give the required opportunities to different types of people to have a chance of improving their lives. (Understanding Clientele Differences)

Planning Conferences

The general procedures on this are quite simple, though the work has to be detailed to reach success. The first step is to make an estimate of the financial requirements of the conference. This will be dependant on the theme, focus or corporate event that is the cause for the conference. That may also decide the date when the conference will be held, the number of people to attend it, the food and drink to be provided, the accommodation for the conference and the material covered or the speakers. It will also decide the style of the event whether dinner theatre, boardroom, cabaret or classroom. Again that will determine the duration of the conference - half day, full day, three days, full week, etc. The next step is the calculation of the equipment that will be needed for the conference and that may be TV sets, projectors, audio, stage, lighting, sound system, music, CD players, etc.

A lot of this will depend on the people attending the conference. They may be clients or only internal staff. That will also determine the location of the conference, the costs, the accommodation and facilities to be provided. This may require certain agreements between groups for the dates and timings. This can be achieved by first deciding an approximate range of dates, communicating that to others for getting their agreement and then setting it up finally. Essentially it is a question of fixing up start and finish times, and the days of the week it can be held. Once the dates and the attendance of the target audience are finalized, then this has to be firmed up with a complete list and a target number that the conference will be attended by. Depending on the target audience, duration of the conference and objective, one has to fix the menus and what they should consist of - tea/coffee only, or buffets, special snacks to be served to… [END OF PREVIEW]
