This is because globalization and anti-poverty reduction efforts are having an impact on the kinds of approaches that are utilized. However, there is division about how to most effectively reach out to students. This has created a situation where various teaching methodologies will come into conflict with each other. As a result, there are differences about the best tactics that must be embraced during this process. To determine which ones are most effective requires looking at different approaches. This will be accomplished by focusing on: the problem, discussing strategies for dealing with these challenges and how technology can be incorporated into the learning environment. Together, these elements will highlight which strategy is the most effective in addressing current and future challenges facing educators. ("World Education Report," 1998)

Depending upon the educator, teaching methodologies will be vastly different. This is because of the training and experiences of the individual will influence what tools they are using during this process. Evidence of this can be seen with observations from Dobbs (2008). She found that inside the field of educational research, there are often conflicting ideas that are contradicting each other. In two recent studies that were conducted by Harvard Medical School and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, they found that the effectiveness of teaching methods will vary. In some cases, the traditional approach should be utilized individually. While at other times, these ideas must be augmented with alternative philosophies such as the PBL method. This is when learning is structured to motivate students based upon: answering a question / solving a problem and reflecting upon how this can be applied in the real world. The best strategy for dealing with these kinds of problems is to use both theories in conjunction with one another. This means that there will be select times, when the ideas from two will be applied inside the classroom. This will improve learning comprehension by taking the best ideas from each.

A good example of this can be seen with observations from Jin (2011). He found that in certain kinds of analytical environments (i.e. math and science) the PBL method is the most effective. The reason why, is because there is a focus on teaching the student critical concepts. Then, discussing how these ideas can be applied in real world situations. Once this takes place, the individual is motivated to learn more by seeing how the information is useful to them in the future. This is when they will recall these ideas and continue to apply them (long after the discussion has ended). (Jin, 2011, pp. 567 -- 572)

In this aspect, one could argue that the PBL method can be used to increase excitement and the understanding of various concepts. This is because it is showing the student the idea and then telling them how they will need it. Once this takes place, is when the individual will feel a sense of empowerment. This is the point that they will retain this information for other activities in the future. (Jin, 2011, pp. 567 -- 572)

However, at the same time, traditional-based teaching approaches must be utilized. This is because; there are also times when students will be introduced to a concept. The best way that this can be accomplished is the educator will present these ideas in a traditional lecture format. This will serve as foundation in providing a background for the various philosophies that have been introduced. Moreover, tutorials can be used as a way to reach out to a more diverse group. These areas are illustrating how traditional teaching methods can provide a foundation for students. (McLoughlin, 2005, pp. 125 -- 129)
