Disasters on Earth and Their Technological Transformation

Ellis, E.C. "Overpopulation Is Not the Problem." Retrieved February 15, 2015, from

This article emphasizes technology's positive effect on mankind by addressing the way that humans were able to progress by implementing diverse technologies in society throughout time. Ellis' perspective is certainly intriguing when considering the way he makes it possible for readers to observe how technology as a whole is one of the principal reasons why people were able to overcome a series of natural disasters across time.

As a rule, society has progressed as a consequence of using technology and in order to be able to sustain itself, humanity needs to take on attitudes that are not natural. "Since prehistory, human populations have used technologies and engineered ecosystems to sustain populations well beyond the capabilities of unaltered "natural" ecosystems." (Ellis) This article plays an important role in expanding the topic under discussion because it demonstrates that implementing technological strategies in contemporary situations is not necessarily an innovative concept. People have been doing this ever since the beginning of time and it is actually one of the reasons why humanity was able to evolve to its current status.

Even with the fact that technology made it possible for humanity to become what it needs to be today, it is still essential for people to concentrate on methods they can use with the purpose of limiting effects associated with disasters. People have the power to act and determination is all that the world needs in order for things to change.

Annotated Bibliography on Technological Solutions to Disasters Assignment

Technological change is constantly occurring and it is essential for the masses to understand this concept. While many technologies invented during recent years have the power to save numerous lives as a result of more rapid response units and by making it possible for victims to contact emergency services more effectively, politics plays an important role in making the difference between a community which is provided with access to life-saving services and one that is not.

With nuclear warfare having been a significant threat during the twentieth century, the Cold War made it possible for humanity to comprehend the critical situation it was in. Furthermore, relationships between a series of countries having access to nuclear weapons experienced problems as a result of the political ideologies that each of these respective powers promoted.

With many present-day countries having poor relations with powers that have the resources to step in and provide life-saving technologies, this help is not really feasible and a lot of lives are lost for no purpose whatsoever. This book makes it possible for readers to acknowledge the fact that regardless of the technological advancements that society as a whole experiences, many communities are not going to have access to these technologies in the near future as a consequence of their position in the international environment.

3. Lane, E. "How technology is changing disaster relief." Retrieved February 15, 2015, from

This article concentrates on emphasizing the significance that technology can have during a critical situation. Lane addresses matters from the perspective of a researcher concerned about disaster relief strategies that can only function by implementing technological solutions. Dr. Paul Gardner Stephen is among the researchers the article relates to and his involvement in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake is certainly intriguing when considering the way he saw the issue. The researcher realized that in addition to conventional strategies that society might take on in order to help people who have been the victims of a natural disaster, one should also consider the way that technology pervaded the affected community and means it can use in order to lessen the effects of the respective natural disaster.

The British government was among the forces involved in helping Haitians affected by the 2010 earthquake. "Alongside tents and drinking water, RAF planes dropped more than 1,000 solar-powered lanterns attached to chargers for all types of mobile handsets to the stranded members of the Yazidi religious community below." (Lane) This makes it possible for people to comprehend the degree to which technology has come to represent an important factor during such a crisis. The fact that there are numerous individuals who could either join in the relief missions as a result of having access to a mobile phone or that one could be able to contact emergency services if he or she had a charged mobile phone can practically make the difference between a survivor and a casualty.

4. Laku, C. (2000). "Our Virtual World: The Transformation of Work, Play and Life via Technology: The Transformation of Work, Play and Life via Technology." Idea Group Inc. (IGI).

Laku addresses the topic of technology in the context of disaster relief from a perspective that incriminates mankind. With a series of current disasters occurring as a consequence of the fact that people have built technologies that disrupted the natural balance in the world, it would be essential to consider the effects that particular actions are going to have on the fact that various countries from around the world concentrated on accumulating as much profits as possible with no regard to the environment led to a series of natural disasters to occur.

Something as seemingly unimportant as a web link can play an important role in making relief activities more effective. A great deal of institutions that concentrate on providing assistance in critical situations cooperate with other companies that have nothing to do with the topic. While this seems pointless, the truth is that it is very effective in raising public awareness concerning the significance of taking urgent action. The masses are practically bombarded with ideas and advice regarding the attitudes they need to take in case of emergency and they are thus more likely to succeed in overcoming serious crises when they actually come across one.

All disasters require individuals to act rapidly and with great effectiveness. This means that institutions such as the Red Cross have to cooperate with other companies long before they are presented with the opportunity to act. By having strong relationships with other communities, groups such as the Red Cross are more likely to act in ways that make it possible for them to actually reduce the number of casualties. "Organizations use a variety of strategies to maintain their relationships. For example, high-ranking bank officials are often asked to serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations to both provide financial guidance and to increase access to necessary funds." (Laku 2000, p. 96)

5. Murray, J. (2012). "Managing Crises and Disasters with Emerging Technologies: Advancements: Advancements." IGI Global.

Murray's book discusses with regard to the potential of present-day technologies to make the world a much safer place. The author is not necessarily concerned about the fact that some of these technologies are still a project and have not been created yet. Murray is actually interested in making his readers observe the importance of being able to provide individuals in need with access to technologies that can save their lives.

A series of environments that are exposed to disasters experience a lot of constrains as a consequence of their location, the resources present there, or as a result of the fact that individuals there have a limited understanding of the strategies they can use with the purpose to lessen effects associated with the disaster.

Taking into account that society has the tools it needs in order to save numerous lives and resources, people need to get actively involved in finding ways to provide everyone with these respective tools. In many cases individuals have everything but the technology, especially considering the fact that many technologies in the present provide the assistance needed for these respective people to actually use them.

6. West, D.M., & Valentini, E. How Mobile Devices are Transforming Disaster Relief and Public Safety. Retrieved February 8, 2015, from

West and Valentini concentrate on providing their readers with a more complex understanding between the relationship between mobile devices and disaster relief. By having access to mobile devices, individuals can play a more active role in dealing with things that threaten someone's well-being. The article goes on to discuss with regard to how "mobile devices assist with public safety, disaster planning, and crisis response." (West & Valentini, p. 1-2)

Factors such as global warming make it increasingly difficult for emergency services to provide effective responses to crisis situations. As a consequence, by implementing warning strategies in mobile devices, the authorities are able to reach out to people better. The frequency of natural disasters seems to have been directly proportional to the increase in mobile technologies aimed at assisting people in critical moments.

Institutions from around the world have gotten actively involved in making mobile technology work in situations when it could make the difference between a survivor and certain doom. By using mobile devices as a means to facilitate rapid response… [END OF PREVIEW] . . . READ MORE
