These technologies included expert decision-making systems, as well as other technologies such as geographic information systems and computerized simulation models which are designed to help emergency managers plan ahead to mitigate the effects of disasters and emergencies. Finally, the research also showed that emergency telephone notification systems are among the most promising new technologies, with this application being capable of reaching most American citizens within a few minutes, providing them with the extra time that can spell the difference between life and death in emergency situations.
