Healthcare Management:

First Student's Response:

The use of technology in the patient care field is mainly for preventing errors and undesirable events such as miscommunications, medication errors, and treatment delays. The earliest use of technological devices in health care was primarily in administration, particularly computerized budgeting and fiscal planning. However, during this period, clinical offices used computer programs that were specifically developed to meet their needs (Bhaskar, 2009). While these earlier systems contributed to several benefits in healthcare, they were associated with certain weaknesses and shortcomings. Some of these weaknesses included the fact that standardization of record keeping and assimilation of computer systems through electronic clinical patient records delayed. Despite these challenges, technology will help in establishing optimal practice and patient care environment.

One of the major ways with which technology will help in developing such practice and patient care environment is through the introduction of standardized computerized sign-out system. The sign-out system will contribute to improved patient care through providing lists of patient problems and illnesses, treatment procedures, and medications in order for incoming health workers to be fully informed. The development of optimal practice and patient care environment through this system is also attributed to the fact that it enables management of health care facilities to lessen costs, increase patient satisfaction, and enhance care giving procedures. In the past few years, the costs of providing high quality care services and patient satisfaction across health care facilities has significantly increased.

Secondly, technology will help in developing optimal practice and patient care environment by lessening medical errors. Technology is primarily designed to reduce errors and shield the effects of such errors (Powell-Cope, Nelson & Patterson, 2008). This will occur in four major ways i.e. removing errors and unexpected events, lessening the occurrence of such incidents, detecting the errors early before the occurrence of injury, and lessening their effects. Consequently, the use of technology in health care will generate positive outcomes for nurses, patients, and the health care organization. This is primarily because it will act as an alarm and warning system that is used for detection of medical errors before injury occurs.

Third, technology will be an important aspect in the modern patient care environment because of the need to transform health care, particularly with advances in various fields like education and scientific evidence. In the past few years, measures to transform health care by using technology have primarily been centered on automation of medical information, enhancing patient-provider communication, lessen errors, and promoting evidence-based care. In light of these changes and its use, technology is currently considered as the greatest available tool for transforming and enhancing the delivery of care services. Technology will help in the development of optimal practice and patient care environment through removing repetitive and mundane tasks, providing efficient utilization of space, enhancing the care environment, and increasing access to health care resources (Cipriano, 2011, p.289).

Generally, the use of technology in health care will enhance safety and efficiency throughout all operations. This is primarily because IT will remove nurses from unnecessary tasks and lessening waste. This will in turn return time to these health care practitioners who will then focus on more direct care and eventually safer care. For instance, the use wireless monitoring devices that integrate with the patient electronic records have the ability to save time and provide warnings when problems are imminent in the treatment process. They also organize and manage work-flow to help enhance patient flow and enable immediate responses to patients. These systems promote the establishment of optimal practice and patient care environment by empowering patients and other stakeholders in the care environment to presume new roles as partners in this process.

Second Student's Response:

The use of technology has become more common in the nursing field though it has not been adopted in ways that reaches its optimal or ideal potential. However, technology should be omnipresent in nursing practice and can transform health care if utilized appropriately. The ability of technology to contribute clinical transformation is dependent on its use as supporting aspect rather than the driver of care procedures. While nurses believe that technology can improve the quality and delivery of care, they have called for the use of systems that help in achieving this objective.

The first technology that can help in this process is integrated systems, which help these practitioners to ease their workload and enable them achieve clinical transformation (Bolton, Gassert & Cipriano, 2008, p.27). Integrated systems promote the development of optimal practice and patient care environment by lessening workloads associated with various workflow issues like medical administration, orders, documentation, communication, and obtaining equipment and supplies. However, these integrated systems should be accessed from the point-of-care delivery i.e. At the bedside.

The second use of technology to achieve this goal involves the adoption of biomedical monitoring systems that are commonly used in acute care or home care environments. These systems will help in optimal practice and patient care environment because they will improve patient privacy and confidentiality. The systems use physiological inspections like fingerprinting or rental images to approve care providers to access patient information.

The third way with which technology will result in optimal practice and patient care environment is through wireless communication and connectivity systems, which enable health care providers to communicate readily at the point of care. In essence, care providers avoid unnecessary travel to a health care facility, which usually delays the implementation of crucial interventions. Care providers will no longer delay such interventions while receiving expert consultation from a distance because of each communication.

Third Student's Response:

In the past decade, the adoption of Information Technology has made the health care field increasingly efficient though it complicates certain aspects of care delivery. Based on its past effects, technology has the potential to continue transforming health care and result in optimal practice and patient care environment. Technology will contribute to this transformation by enhancing opportunities for workers in this industry. Actually, one of the major factors that have lead to the inability to achieve optimal care is the ever-increasing shortage of health workers despite growing demand for care services. As technology improves and its use in health care increases, there will be more opportunities for health workers, especially through the emergence of new careers in health ("New Health Care Technology," 2012).

Secondly, technology will result in optimal practice and patient care environment by its changes in gathering health information for delivery of care services. Through technological systems, physicians, nurses and other practitioners will easily access patients' complete medical records and information. These practitioners will increasingly depend on computer systems to provide a list of patients' medical information through electronic medical records. This will be followed by review of all medical information from previous hospital visits before designing appropriate treatment procedures. The use of computer systems for medical information will promote optimal practice and health care environment since physicians will be able to see test results online upon completion of the tests. They will also record interactions with patients immediately, which enable them to be better prepared for future visits.

Optimal practice and patient care environment will also be achieved by the development of new, improved medical equipments as technology improves. For instance, the field of radiology will constantly undergo vital technological improvements, which will result in the innovation of new X-ray equipments that will enhance patient care. Lab technicians will also experience significant innovations that will not only transform their occupational and operational landscape but will also enhance quality and delivery of patient care.

The question on how technology will assist in establishment of optimal practice and patient care environment has provided insights on the significance, role, and impact of technology in the health care sector. This practice of analyzing various responses from students regarding the question has shown how technology is an important aspect of health care delivery with far-reaching impacts on the health care sector, especially in nursing. From this question, I have learned that health workers should be prepared for the diversified nature of the effect of technology given its significance in today's health practice.

Based on these answers, it seems technology will develop to become an indispensable element in health care practice. Actually, health care professionals and practitioners will find it difficult to carry out their various functions and operations without the use of technological devices in the clinical process. The ability of these professionals to enhance patient care is dependent on their ability to embrace technology and use it to enhance their practices while designing ways to overcome its shortcomings.

The application of insights from this question into the workplace will include preparing for increased used and dependence on technology in the clinical setting. This preparation will include adopting computerize systems in various clinical processes like management of medical and administrative information. In addition, the workplace should design hospital-wide system or network that will support the flow information across departments through computerized systems. The other aspect of incorporating lessons from this question in the workplace is… [END OF PREVIEW] . . . READ MORE
