Children share leadership roles more frequently and develop positive attitudes toward learning." However Haugland suggest that in order for most effective use of the computers "they must provide concrete experiences, children have free access and control the learning experience, children and teachers learn together, teachers encourage peer tutoring, and teachers use computers to teach powerful ideas."


The proposed study will be conducted in one second grade class. Second grade is chosen because it is felt that the first -graders may not be quite ready for technology in the classroom, and it is better to introduce the computers early, rather than wait until the students are in the third grade. It may also be that most second graders already have a computer in the home and so have some exposure to its use and will not be as intimidated as the first-graders.

The study will focus on using the computers and the internet in specific areas of the curriculum to increase student interest and motivation with the hope that this will decrease the level of restlessness and disruption in the classroom.

In addition, the effect of integrating the technology on the students' academic performance will be examined. In order to fulfill this study the following steps will be carried out:

As the teacher-researcher preparation for this experiment will involve familiarizing self with the available software programs suitable for second -graders in various subject areas. This will be done by joining a discussion listserv for elementary school teachers to share in the expertise and experiences of other teachers., and also by spending some time examining these programs and exploring the possibilities of how they can be used in the classroom.

Research Proposal on Technology to Improve Behavior and Assignment

In order for the study to be manageable and be completed in the time frame, two areas of the curriculum will be chosen for integration of technology- Social Studies and Language arts. The activities chosen will be based on the suggestions in Huntinger's study- software to simulate field trips in the Social Studies class, publishing the children's writing.

The pretest and posttest design will be used to measure the effects of technology use on the students' behavior and academic performance. The Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development and Behavior Interaction Tool as recommended in Hutinger's study will be given to the students. Their academic performance will be measured by regular classroom tests, not only in the subjects included in the study, i.e. Social Studies and Language Arts, but in all their other subjects to explore the hypothesis that increasing motivation and attention span will be transferred to all their academic work.

At the beginning of the study the students will be required to fill out the research questionnaires to measure their development and their attitude and behavior related to the computer. During the experimental time they will be exposed to the use of the computers in various activities-:

Social Studies- one class period per week will be spent on exploring software related to simulated field trips, e.g. To an airport, a fire station, a farm etc.. The students will be encouraged to manipulate the program and report on their field trip. They will be helped and encouraged to use the internet to find information and answer questions about the place they decide to visit on their field trip. At the end of the project they will complete a brief assessment of what they have learned not only about the place that they visited but about planning a trip, traveling, etc.

Language Arts- The students will start by learning to use a simple word processing program for typing up their written stories. They will then progress to a simple art design program and will practice creating artwork to go with their stories. Finally they will be helped to prepare a book of their stories and get it ready for publication. They will be encouraged to market these books to the other classes in the school and to their families and friends.

In addition to the assessment grades for these specific projects, their regular test scores during the project will also be examined at the end of the project. Results will be analysed to determine if there was any difference in their developmental process during the research study; to determine if there are any improvements in their attitude and interest in the computers, and to determine if there are any improvements in their academic work generally. Observations of the classroom environment will be carried out to look for decrease in the number of disruptions during class time and improvement in the time students spend on task.
