SAMPLE EXCERPT:

[. . .] Likewise, monitoring via telemedicine and electronic consulting technology help patients to overcome the distance-related issues that keep them from receiving quality care under traditional circumstances.

Employing telehealth strategies can also reduce the costs associated with providing quality care to patients (Kvedar, Coye, Everett, 2014). As time and space issues that confront patients and providers in rural areas also include variables such as cost to provide care, telehealth strategies can be even more impactful on increasing quality care when this factor is considered.

In summation, the issues facing rural healthcare providers are distance, time and cost as areas are spread out rather than condensed and overcoming these obstacles can be quite difficult. Thus, telehealth and virtual care can be adequate techniques that providers use to meet with clients, monitor patients, and continue education.

Information management tools and technologies that can also improve outcomes include electronic health records (EHR), which allow practitioners to access medical records of patients directly from wherever they are -- whether that is on the go, at the patient's home, or in the office/facility. EHR helps healthcare providers to record medical information so that other providers can also access it so long as they are utilizing the same tools and technology. It is a much faster, easier and safer way of sharing and recording medical information for patients than the traditional method of having to send for records from a specific office, wait for those records to ship with the potential risk of them being lost or mishandled from point A to point B. Technologies that can be used to monitor patients and improve outcomes include telehealth, which is being used in many capacities, from the ICU to rural areas where distance makes monitoring difficult (Kumar, Merchant, Reynolds, 2013). Telehealth helps nurses overcome a lack of staffing and/or distance related issues that keep patients from receiving the type of care they require.

In conclusion, the issues that rural healthcare providers face when treating patients are related to the geography of the region. These issues consist of time and space variables that make providing care more difficult because of the distances patients and/or providers must travel and the cost of scheduling and making time for various conferences, consultations and/or education classes. Virtual learning, telemedicine and electronic consultation are three types of technologies that providers can utilize that have evidence-based research to support their usage. Electronic health records can be used by providers who seek to access patient's medical information quickly and safely and it is an effective way of managing care and safely practicing quality care. Telemedicine is also an effective way to provide monitoring of patients whether they are in the ICU or at their own homes where they can be safely and comfortably monitored.
