Transportation Considerations Across America

The current White House economic stimulus plan for transportation should have a considerable impact on a number of different facets of transportation in the United States. The generous stimulus plan should significantly affect aspects of transportation from infrastructure changes to policy, business and commerce to the people's lives that depend on various transportation systems for both work and pleasure. Not all of these ramifications are projected to create a positive impact, as there are some undesirable results that will doubtlessly occur as well. Overall, however, this much needed infusion of capital in this vital area of the nation's foundation should help to ameliorate multiple issues currently plaguing the country's transportation system.

The effects on the nation's infrastructure should be formidable. Currently, there is any number of major highways in a multitude of states, counties and municipalities that are regularly congested. The funding from the aforementioned economic stimulus plan can help to alleviate such congestion and thus produce desirable effects for the many industries that depend on transportation in what has increasingly become a global supply chain network. A prime example of the sort of boons derived for infrastructure that the stimulus plan can create is evinced in New Jersey's major highways and turnpikes. After calculating many different factors such as the lengths of time that traffic accidents devoured and the number of people that utilize the state's most vital freeways every day, New Jersey was able to greatly accommodate its myriad motorists by expanding the freeway to incorporate more lanes (Corzine, 2009). The addition of even one lane for every major interstate roadway across the country could substantially alleviate traffic congestion, creating numerous benefits such as increased punctuality and the transportation of greater amounts of good for the supply chains of any numbers of businesses. Thus, transportation would be more readily facilitated for commuters and casual traversers alike. As such, it is clear that the contemporary economic stimulus plan discussed in the White House would both increase efficiency for business and those utilizing this infrastructure in the global supply chain, and provide a much needed solution to the nation's aching congestion woes.

The benefits of the stimulus plan would also extend beyond the country's infrastructure and also produce a positive impact on the lives of a number of different Americans. One of the most meaningful repercussions of the aforementioned plan is that it could help to boost the economy, which is currently attempting a slow climb from the recession that began in earnest last decade. Quite simply, there are a number of different jobs that the stimulus plan could help effect across the nation. Any purported changes to the country's infrastructure, for example, would require copious amounts of construction workers, land surveillance companies, and a number of professionals of all varieties to shape the future of America's roads. Within the state of New Jersey alone, spending to upgrade the state's infrastructure and transportation structures was projected to create over 15,000 jobs (Corzine, 2009). Those numbers would certainly increase with more funding in different parts of the country, which could potentially help give the economy the push it needs to effect a full scale resurgence. Other sources indicate that one of the needs for this plan is to stimulate the nation's economy (Calmes, 2010). Regardless, there are many different types of employees who will attain gainful employment and help improve the lives of their friends and families alike simply do to the spending that the plan discussed in the White House would produce. The economic benefits could possibly extend beyond those working in the immediate vicinity of the transportation agency to include elements of both the public and the private sector. Therefore, it is quite clear that the stimulus package would create a desirable change in the lives of those who are both paid to sanction benefits for others by working on changes to the nation's transportation, as well as those who will utilize the boons they bring.

In many ways, the business consequences of the increased spending that the stimulus plan would bring pertain to both the differences in the country's infrastructure and on the lives of the people involved with it. The commercial advantages of the plan include more than just those that are able to directly monetize from it, but those who are able to do so indirectly as well. As previously alluded to, the facet of business that likely has the most to gain from any renovations of the United States' transportation structure is that which pertains to organizational supply chain. The global economy is a reality, and there are countries, organizations, and multinational corporations are the majority of the earth's population that stand to benefit from the increased efficiency that improvements to the transportation structure can bring. Efficiency for these entities goes well beyond merely getting home from work 10 minutes earlier or forgoing potentially time consuming traffic incidents a couple of times of year. It means the ability for organizations to utilize the strategy of Efficient Consumer Response, which makes the customer more of a factor in the supply chain process (Chopra and Meindl, 2007).Instead, the improved performances for the purchasing, shipping and delivering of supplies means that those involved in this industry should increase their productivity as well. Organizations that are able to compete deliveries more expediently will also be able to complete more deliveries, which adds to their potential for boosting revenues and satisfying more clients. Services that choose to leverage just in time delivery, for instance, have the distinct potential of growing their customer base due to their greater degrees of efficiency and productivity (Center, 2009). Subsequently, their businesses will reflect the burgeoning customer influence in the supply chain sphere. Additionally, when one is attempting to get goods from international entities to make some of the essential products that require raw materials from parts of Asia and India, improved efficiency generally equates to improved financial prowess.

Other issues intrinsically associated with the economic stimulus plan pertain to developments in property value and in urbanization. Dedicating more pecuniary resources to transportation can also result in expansion of infrastructure to more places within both urban and rural areas. There is typically a causal relationship between property values and transportation wherein the former definitely affect the latter. In fact, it can do so in many ways, especially when one considers the realities of eminent domain. Eminent domain is the practice in which property owners are notified that their abodes are in areas that the government has decided to utilize for the purpose of creating various forms of transportation. In those instances, property owners are offered monetary compensation for their residences which enables the government to increase its transportation presences. More importantly, perhaps, increased access to transportation structures such as stations and terminals for various forms of motor and railways tends to result in higher property values. Within urban environments, of course, the result is greater access and means to traverse the city -- which is typically beneficial at the state level. The boons of increased urbanization due to more transportation infrastructure, however, become much more ambiguous at the city and county levels.

The issue of policy is an interesting one when exploring the ramifications of the economic stimulus plan for transportation. Greater changes associated with transportation can certainly help to determine relevant issues in policy at all levels -- including the federal (Dilger, 2003). Perhaps one of the best examples of this fact is the changes in airline security policy that arose at the beginning of the last decade due to unforeseen circumstances in international affairs. The addition of new lanes on the freeway could result in higher rates of speed on average in a number of different states. Policy affecting speed limits or the number of highway patrolmen employed could change to accommodate for changes in speed on the freeway. Additionally, policy changes might implement other technological means of both monitoring and regulating the behavior of drivers due to changes wrought in the wake of the implementation of the current White House economic stimulus plan. Such measures have the potential to produce both positive and negative ramifications of drivers.

Overall, it widely appears that the economic stimulus plan can produce advantageous effects in a number of different aspects of commerce and socioeconomic concerns in the coming months. It can refurbish the nation's infrastructure, creating jobs and increasing the supply chain network and its efficiency. The plan can also positively impact the economy by creating jobs and enhancing the global supply chain network. Additionally, it has the potential to increase property values and improve urbanization, while influencing policy decisions to account for the myriad changes discussed in this document.
