Term Paper on Turkish Minority and Influence in Germany Assignment

Before beginning the debate regarding the influence that the Turks have had on the Germans, it is important to highlight here that geographically, Germany and Turkey are two countries close in proximity being the main reason of Turkish influence. Based on the proximity, not only are the Germans under an influence of the Turkish culture but the Turks seemed to be adopting the German culture as well. There is a great and a long-term history of the cultural and influence-based exchange between the two ethnicities and countries. Since the Turks have been living in Germany since decades, it is seen that a majority of the second generation Turks have developed a great bond with the parent country and these Turks are working in many ways to benefit the parent country.

One of the main facts that have been noticed in terms of cultural influence is that at workplaces, schools, or universities, German culture is the most dominant culture

. At leisure times, based on the ethnic lines of the Turks, Turkish culture is seen to be more dominant. One of the most famous Turkish food known as Doner is now the most famous food in Germany. Sports have had a great influence from the Turks as well. The soccer world cup has seen many Turks representing and playing for the German team and millions of Turks cherishing and supporting German soccer team.

Influence on Language

In the beginning, first generation Turks used to speak only Turkish language. However, in case of the modern second generation Turks, it is seen that the Turkish have adopted German language as well. German language has had a great influence from the Turkish language as the Germans have verbally adopted many words and phonetics from the Turkish language

Influence on Religion

Turks are the largest Muslim community in Germany. In 1960, the term Muslim and Turk were synonymous. More than 64% of the Muslim population in Germany is based on the Turkish Muslims. In the mosques, German and Turk Muslims pray in the same lanes so there is a great Turk influence on the way Germans follow Islam. It is seen that the way Turk Muslims follow Islam is now incorporated to some extent on the way Germans follow Islam. There seems to be more importance of religion for the Turks living in Germany based on the reasons that relate to ethnic reassurance.

Turks in German Politics: Muslim Turk Representation

With the beginning of the settlement of Turks in Germany, there was a great and rising concern of 'outside Muslims' settling in the country, which was thought to lead to certain security threats in the country. After the 911 incidents, the fear seemed to be transformed into a great concern. This concern was in a need to be addressed by either the Germans or the Muslim Turks themselves.

It has been mentioned that the Turk Muslims constitute the largest group of Muslims in Germany. More than 6 million Alevis in Germany practice an easygoing form of Islam in Germany. Based on the concentration of Muslim Turks in Germany, representatives of many Turk Muslim groups now sit in the German Islamic Conference that was established by the interior minister of Germany, Wolfgang Schauble. One of the main aims of allowing the representation of the Turk Muslims in German Islamic Conference was to remove any allegations of extremism involved with the name of the Muslims to maintain peace and integrity in the country between the two Muslim communities

Turkish Vote and German Politics

Importantly, Turkish influence on German politics is significantly higher as compared to the influence of minorities on other parent countries' politics. This situation can be compared with that of France. More than 8 to 10% of minority-based Muslim population lives in France having no Muslim representative in the French parliament. One of the main questions that have gained importance in the German politics relates to the fact of Turk representation in the German politics and the importance of Turk vote in German politics. Safety of Turk rights in Germany gained more attention in 1998 with historical victory of Social Democratic Party under the leadership of Gerhard Schroder. Great increase in the second and third generation Turks was seen after the changes in German citizenship reform in 1999

Recently, there have been many changes in the way Turkish minority is represented in German parliament, Bundestag. The number of representatives from the Turks sitting in German parliament can be assessed by comparing the setup of the 16th German Parliament elections of 2005 and 17th German Parliament election held in 2009. Since 2005, same number of members represents the Turks in Germany. In 2005, 5 out of 614 members were representing the minority Turk population in Germany and in 2009, 5 of 622 members of the parliament represent the minority Turk population in Germany

. Only 0.8% of the German parliament represents the Turks. This issue has gained an increased importance in the international political platform. There is a rising voice towards German parliament to change and increase the ratio of Turk representatives sitting in the German parliament.

Other than the facts that surround the representation of the Turks in the German parliament, Social Democratic Party and Left Party are the two main political parties representing the Turks in Germany. According to the latest reports, Social Democratic Party and the Left Party dominate some regions of Germany. These scenarios are seen as a great success of the Turks in German politics. One of the main strategies that have been linked with an increased representation is the association of Turks with more than one political party.

Since the last three decades, there has been a spread of the Turks in SPD, and The Greens party. According to the political lobbies, there are chances that the Turks will become a part of the German Christian Democratic Union taking important positions and designations. It is being said that this party will work mainly for the conservation and an increased development of the moral values within the German society

Economic Influence

Economic influence of Turks on Germans is closely related to an increased political representation of the Turks in German parliament. One of the main facts that need to be highlighted here is that when the Turkish people started immigrating in Germany in 1960, most were laborers, proletariat, industrial workers, and small-scale workers in Germany

. The latest research and studies have shown that now, Turks are business owners, most are unemployed, large majority of the Turks are now involved in the while collar professions, state employees, academics, and artists. These professions have allowed the Turks to blend in. These days it has been realized that more diverse workforce can help businesses grow and generate more revenues. There are great positive changes being seen in the German economy based on an increased integration of the Turks in German workforce

Turks are considered the greatest foreign population in Germany. This population has now been shaping many German cities in many ways. There is a great change in Islamic following styles in Germany and these changes are based on Turkish styles. Nowadays more voices are rising to increase Turkish representation in the German parliament.
