Watson described the model as both art and science because it offers a framework that intersects and embraces with science, art, humanities, and spirituality. The theory is dynamic and is able to adapt to the ever-changing practice of nursing. Watson developed 10 caring needs that are critical for human experience that should be addressed by nurses. Human beings have a hierarchy of needs that should be satisfied. These needs are used to determine how best a nurse can care for the patients under his/her care. By understanding the needs of the patient, a nurse would be able to offer the best care suitable for the patient.

The theory has been used in many types of research that have been published all aimed at analyzing the caring theory being implemented in healthcare facilities. In nursing administration, the theory has also been highly beneficial. Nursing administration is concerned with the proper utilization of available resources, which includes nurses. Administrators are encouraged to urge the nurses to reflect and explore on who they are in order for them to offer optimal care to their patients (Yeter Durgun Ozan PhD, 2015). In nursing administration, the theory has also been used to analyze the needs of the nurses and ensure that the primary and secondary needs of the nurse are met. Nursing administration requires a complex balance of delivering quality care to the patients and having the best-qualified nurses. Nurses also have to be well rested and they are not overworked to ensure that they can deliver the quality care expected by the hospital. With the current shortage of nurses in America, it has become quite difficult for nursing administrators to guarantee that the few available nurses are able to deliver care to the patients.

Applying the Theory to Address Nursing Shortage

Essay on Watson s Theory of Human Caring Assignment

Nurses are found to be overworked, stressed, and sick most of the times. This shows that nurses are dissatisfied with their profession and most would prefer to leave than continue hurting themselves. By using the theory of human caring hospital administrators can realize that if they take care of the needs of the nurses, then the nurses would be happier and they will, in turn, deliver the quality care needed by the patients (Brousseau, Cara, & Blais, 2017). The theory also pushes for caring in the nursing profession, which has been lacking and could be a contributor towards the shortage being faced. By following the 10 carative factors nurses could be able to encourage more nurses to join the profession.

Incorporating this theory in the current practice would ensure that nurses are more satisfied in their roles and their needs are well taken care of, which would result in the increase of nurses and would go a long way in reducing the current shortage being faced. Nurses would also feel appreciated and cared for by the organization. Patient outcomes would also improve because the nurses would be less strained and not overworked, which would reflect on the performance of their duties and work. The caring of patients would also be positively impacted in that patients would be well taken care of as the nurses are motivated to perform their duties and there is nothing that is stressing them in any way.
