Philip Glass Biography Term Paper

… "

There also was the curious effect Glass' music had on the listener's sense of time. The constant beat and subtly shirting rhythms over a static harmonic structure tended to hypnotize and make the listener lose track of time. However, Glass' music soon showed signs of becoming decidedly larger (some of it, like Music in Twelve Parts ran for hours), it remained structurally sparse, using few chord changes. Instead of long developmental sections, which had been normal with "serious" music, there were increasingly complex repetitions and overlapping of lines.

Because Glass' music repeated and varied a very small library of basic musical ideas, the term "minimalism" began to be applied to it.

A number of other composers were experimenting along the same lines, and the…. [read more]

Pulitzer Prize's Effect on Journalism Essay

… Pulitzer

Joseph Pulitzer and his Eponymous Prize: The Shaping and Stature of Modern American Journalism

Joseph Pulitzer is remembered variously as a pioneering voice and face in the newspaper industry and the field of journalism, and as a quasi-robber baron with more greed than conscience and a willing to sell principles if it meant selling papers. Neither view can be considered wholly incorrect, though both are highly oversimplified (as are all such one-dimensional views of any individual, of especial historical significance or not). Pulitzer, like many (if not most) men of great wealth and power, did both great and terrible things, and it is only fitting that he should be remembered for all of them. More than anything else, however, he deserves to be remembered…. [read more]

Beaux Strategem by George Farquhar Essay

… In this case the play was during the late 17th century in Great Britain. So the colors of the costumes were very muted with petticoats and wigs. The choice of costume for Dorian with her scenes with Mrs. Sullivan were well done.

Lighting is often overlooked in plays but it truly does help in setting the tone of a scene. Most of the scenes are fairly dark with a dark background and maybe some candles lit or light shining mainly on the characters. I found it with the comedic components of the play, the extra lighting helped breathe a sense of joy. I really liked that.

The sound/score helped just like the lighting by adding anticipation, suspense, almost prepping the audience for what was to…. [read more]

Yoko Ono and Her Art Term Paper

… She uses this "half" theme to show something is missing or gone, and that could be a loved one that went to the hospital and never returned. Ono's style is very modern and very commanding. Some of her artwork does not seem like art at all, it is just random everyday pieces grouped together, like helmets or pieces of paper, or words written right on a wall. This is her modern, avant-garde style, and it is not always attractive, but it is always different. This piece is stark and disturbing, and yet I did not want to stop looking at it, because I thought I might miss something, and not see just what Ono was trying to say with her work. I think her art…. [read more]

Vincent Van Gogh Research Proposal

INTRODUCTION had a hard struggle with myself...."

Vincent van Gogh (Van Goh's Letters, 2009)

The Painter

The Painter" sold only one of his paintings, now worth millions of dollars, during his lifetime. "The Painter," Vincent van Gogh, frequently depicted people in hard times, Linda Yoffe (1995) notes in "Vincent, Theo, painting and self-esteem." Today, considered one of the greatest Dutch painters and draftsmen after Rembrandt, van Gogh's art significantly influenced Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh, born in 1853, began painting seriously in 1880, Arthur Max (2004), an Associated Press writer, reports in "Van Gogh letter refers to family tragedy." Theo, van Gogh's younger brother, supported "The Painter" for much of his life.

Belief Systems of Christians Term Paper

… It is interesting to note that many of the angels have similar names in both of the religions, even though the Arabic names appear different. In both religions, there are angels with the names of Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael, and they are mentioned in the English translation of the Qur'an. It says, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - for he brings down the (revelation) to your heart by God's will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings to those who believe - Whoever is an enemy to God, and His angels and prophets, to Gabriel and Michael - Lo! God is an enemy to those who reject Faith" (2:97-98, Ali, 2000, p. 21). The Bible mentions many of the same…. [read more]

Shepheardes Calender by Edmund Spenser Thesis

… Edmund Spenser

The Social Critique in Edmund Spenser's Pastoral Epic: The Shephearde's Calendar

The pastoral tradition of poetic verse is driven by a touch of romanticism for the common man. Indeed, by its very design, the style is intended to glorify the connection between peasantry and the land in its mythologizing of those who tended to the flocks. The 'pastoral' implications of this style of poetry genuinely referred to its content concerning those who wandered the meadows as pastors to a flock, often in solitude, as their charge of sheep grazed. It is worth speculating for the purposes of the research conducted here that the shepherd became a suitable subject for this type of glorification because he remained both productive and yet deeply connected to…. Oscar Wilde a Man Essay

… However, fortunes are sometimes pinned on legends, and the convenient tale of an orphan baby found in a handbag at King's Cross Station is sufficient to persuade Lady Bracknell that Jack is a man of breeding. As a result, the wedding will be permitted to take place. Regardless, Lady Bracknell maintains that, "…in families of high social position strange coincidences are not supposed to occur" (Wilde 428).

Social status is only one of several layers that Wilde peels back to reveal the superficialities governing the lives of the British aristocracy and landed gentry of the time. Wilde's characterization and his satire are strengthened by the fact that conventional morality doesn't trouble any of the major characters (Gagnier, 1986). Indeed, conventional morality is turned on its…. [read more]

Importance of Affirmative Action Term Paper

… Validity of Data

America considers herself the land of the free, home of the brave, and while the second component to this maxim is rarely challenged, the first has come under fire throughout all of the nation's history, particularly in the last 40 years.

After all, America is a nation of stark contrasts: On one hand, it is truly the only nation in the world in which a minority can literally immigrate one day, and be well on the way to a successful career and job the next, without the shackles of prejudice and discrimination.

However, this experience is not shared by all immigrants, and it is certainly not shared by the largest indigenous minority in the United States: African-Americans. Together with Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans represent…. [read more]
